SUMMARY:Globally Connected @FIT: Looking at\, Loving\, and Writing About Art\, with New York Times Critic Roberta Smith
DESCRIPTION:Globally Connected @FIT and the Virtual Artist Talk Series presents Roberta Smith\, the co-chief art critic at The New York Times. \nAt the Times\, Smith regularly reviews museum exhibitions\, art fairs and gallery shows in New York\, North America and abroad. Since joining the newspaper in 1991\, she has written on Western and non-Western art from the prehistoric to the contemporary eras. She sees her main responsibility as “getting people out of the house\,” making them curious enough to go see the art she covers\, but she also enjoys posting artworks on Instagram and Twitter. Special areas of interest include ceramics\, textiles\, folk and outsider art\, design and video art. \nShe has written critic’s notebooks on the need for museums to be free to the public; Brandeis University’s decision to close its museum and sell its art collection (later rescinded)\, and the unveiling of the Google Art Project\, which allowed online HD views of paintings in the collections of scores of leading museums worldwide. \nBorn in New York City and raised in Kansas\, Smith is a graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa. Before coming to the Times she wrote for the Village Voice. In 2003 she received the College Art Association’s Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism. \nAbout Globally Connected @ FIT \nThis is a series of 45-minute virtual discussions\, talks\, and presentations for the FIT community led by students\, faculty\, and alumni to advance global education at FIT in our new world without mobility. The major themes are fashion\, art\, sustainability\, racial equity\, and life during the pandemic around the world. Hosted by the Office of International Programs and the Cultural Fellows\, and the History of Art Department. \nAbout the Virtual Artist Talks Series \nThe FIT Art and Design Gallery regularly holds online conversations with artists about work that is on view in the gallery or sponsored by the School of Art and Design. \nThis virtual event is for the FIT community only; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Fashion Culture Online Event: From Goodwill to Grunge: The Joyful Rebellion of Vintage Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Kurt Cobain on the cover of Request magazine\, November 1993.\nJennifer Le Zotte in conversation with Colleen Hill \nArtists and performers—from Marcel Duchamp and Fanny Brice to Janis Joplin and  Kurt Cobain—all helped make secondhand fashion a visual marker for youth in revolt. Jennifer Le Zotte’s book\, titled From Goodwill to Grunge (UNC Press\, 2017)\, looks at how clothing\, style\, and commerce came together to change American culture and examines how secondhand goods sold at thrift stores\, flea markets\, and garage sales came to be both profitable and culturally influential. Le Zotte traces the origins and meanings of “secondhand style” and explores how buying pre-owned clothing went from a signifier of poverty to a declaration of rebellion. Considering buyers and sellers from across the political and economic spectrum\, Le Zotte shows how conservative and progressive social activists—from religious and business leaders to anti-Vietnam protesters and drag queens—shrewdly used the exchange of secondhand goods for economic and political ends. \nAbout Fashion Culture Programs \nThe Museum at FIT’s fall Fashion Culture programs have moved online! All programs will premiere on the museum’s YouTube channel at 6 pm on the designated day.
