SUMMARY:Exhibition: Power Mode — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Pyer Moss by Kerby Jean-Raymond\, jacket\, fall 2015\, USA\, gift of Pyer Moss.\nThe Museum at FIT is temporarily closed.  \nView the online exhibition here. \nDecember 10\, 2019–May 9\, 2020  \nPower is part identity\, part behavior\, and part physicality. The way we outfit ourselves can play an outsized role in conveying power to others—whether it be the pink “pussy hats” at the 2017 Women’s March or the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coordinated Thom Browne suits during the 2018 NBA playoffs. However\, power is not easily defined. It is political position and economic status\, but also military strength\, sexual authority\, rebellion\, and protest. Each form of power has found sartorial expression in a variety of ways\, from gray flannel suits to latex fetish wear\, and from gilded brocades to distressed jeans. \nPower Mode will explore the role fashion plays in establishing\, reinforcing\, and challenging power dynamics within society. It will include both men’s and women’s clothing from the 18th century to the present\, organized thematically to concentrate on five categories: military\, suits\, status\, rebellion\, and sex. Each section will investigate how certain designs and garments have come to be culturally associated with power\, as well as how their meanings have evolved over time. The exhibition will also examine how fashion designers have interpreted these stylistic archetypes—both to convey and to subvert power. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Virtual Talk: "What Would Benjamin Franklin Think About Facebook?"
DESCRIPTION:Amy Werbel\, History of Art Professor and Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom\, will deliver—online—the 2020 Annual Fulbright Lecture at the Benjamin Franklin House in London\, titled “What Would Benjamin Franklin Think About Facebook?” \nAs both a publisher and postmaster\, Benjamin Franklin frequently had to confront the vexing challenge of squaring the ideals of truth and liberty with the realities of immorality and the threat of harm to private and public interests. While he advocated fiercely for the rights of journalists\, Franklin also committed himself to restricting material from his publications that “might countenance Vice\, or promote Immorality\,” as well as “such things as might do real Injury to any person.” Always\, he worried that “an evil magistrate intrusted with power to punish for words would be armed with a weapon the most destructive and terrible.” As we ponder the prospect of greater censorship of social media\, Franklin’s experiences and views shed necessary light on our best path forward in tumultuous times. \nThis online event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required; register here.

SUMMARY:Online Exhibition: Jacaranda: 2020 Illustration MFA Visual Thesis Exhibition—Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:June 11–August 31\, 2020 \nThe School of Graduate Studies presents the 2020 Illustration MFA Visual Thesis Exhibition\, Jacaranda\, as an online exhibition hosted by the Society of Illustrators. \nThe 2020 MFA in Illustration candidates have spent the past three years of graduate study supporting\, challenging\, and encouraging each other through remarkable and extraordinary circumstances. As individuals they are talented\, dedicated artists. As a group they are unbreakable. In their online exhibition on the Society of Illustrators website you’ll see nine projects exploring narratives with themes of personal analysis\, cultural history\, science\, reportage\, and fantasy. Viewed together\, the work is a powerful unified artistic expression. \nThe Jacaranda tree is a symbol of the cohort’s trip to California. It is a fitting commemoration of their shared growth and their sturdy\, enduring bond. We are proud to present this work that represents the culmination of three years of academic study and professional development for the class of 2020. \nThe MFA in Illustration at FIT is a three-year program designed to provide opportunities to develop a creative voice and refine technical skills. All aspects of the illustration field are explored. Students complete a qualifying academic paper that focuses on a specific element of illustration history\, criticism\, or cultural impact. The program culminates with a visual thesis\, initiated by the student\, which synthesizes all elements of the program.
