SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Queer History Month Film Screening: Rafiki
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED \nRafiki (Swahili for “friend”) is a 2018 Kenyan drama film directed by Wanuri Kahiu. Rafiki is the story of romance that grows between two young women\, Kena and Ziki\, amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya. Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father’s shop and awaits the start of nursing school\, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly\, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood. \nThis screening is brought to you by the FIT Film and Media department\, the FIT Film Club\, and the FIT LGBTQ Alliance. The screening will also provide an opportunity for networking with members of the Uptown Queer Collective\, a local group dedicated to create a safe space for folx\, femmes\, and butches of all genders. They strive to create safe spaces for specific subcultures of the queer community in addition to space for the intersection of such communities and ask that each specific space is respected. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Eleanor Lambert: Empress of Seventh Avenue — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Halston\, evening gown\, 1972\, USA\, gift of Lauren Bacall\, 74.107.30.\nThe Museum at FIT is temporarily closed.  \nView the online exhibition here. \nMarch 3–28\, 2020\nGallery FIT\n \nAs the “original fashion publicist\,” Eleanor Lambert was a defining character of 20th century American fashion. Over her 75-year career\, Lambert helped establish a number of organizations and initiatives that shaped the American fashion landscape\, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America\, the International Best Dressed List\, the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award\, and Press Week\, which evolved into the current New York Fashion Week. Lambert worked to elevate the American fashion designer to celebrity status\, and her clientele included such influential designers as Stephen Burrows\, Halston\, and Claire McCardell. Eleanor Lambert: Empress of Seventh Avenue is the first exhibition to explore her tireless work in establishing New York as an international fashion capital\, while simultaneously pioneering the profession of fashion publicist. \n\nThe exhibition will be accompanied by three events in March 2020: “All About Eleanor\,” a documentary screening and panel discussion with Moses Berkson\, the director of the film and Lambert’s grandson and her former personal assistants John Tiffany\, author of Eleanor Lambert: Still Here\, and James LaForce\, CEO and founder of LaForce Communications; a “Fashion Media: Discourse on Diversity” panel discussion; and The International Best-Dressed List: The Official Story book talk with Amy Fine Collins. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Vanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures: The Yörüks of Taurus Mountains\, Turkey — Closes
DESCRIPTION:The Gladys Marcus Library is temporarily closed.  \nFebruary 3–March 31\, 2020 \nVanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures: The Yörüks of Taurus Mountains\, Turkey was inaugurated by the photographer and professor Praveen K. Chaudhry\, Social Sciences\, along with ethnographer Souzeina Mushtaq. Chaudhry and Mushtaq have been working on the issues of nomads and weavers in Kashmir and Tibet for more than a decade\, and recently started working on Yörük community in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. The ongoing visual ethnographic research details the impact of migration and globalization on these nomadic communities and documents their daily lives. It also puts a face to this invisible community and their vanishing culture. \nThe idea of a modern state birthed the notion of citizenship\, which enforced the separation of legal citizens and the “others.” Historically speaking\, nomadic communities did not belong to any marked territory because their lifestyle dictated them to migrate from one place to another in search of pastures. The creation of borders and the idea of belonging to a particular state created a complex identity crisis for nomadic communities\, rendering them invisible in the socio-political scenario of the modern state. \nWith the endless information overload\, the issues of nomads and the weavers get shelved. The individuals are reduced to statistics. This exhibition attempts to humanize nomads and the weavers as they negotiate their changing lifestyles in this globalized world. It invites viewers to be a part of their journey and participate in the discourses about home\, belonging\, and statehood. \nThis exhibition is co-sponsored by the Presidential Scholars Program; Gladys Marcus Library; History of Art Department; Social Sciences Department; Global Fashion Management Program; School of Graduate Studies; and School of Liberal Arts. Vanishing Community\, Vanishing Cultures was also on view at Museo de La Ciudad de Cuernavaca (MuCIC) September 2–30\, 2019\, where it was sponsored by Centro Morelense de las Artes del Estado de Morelos\, Cuernavaca\, Mexico.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ballerina: Fashion's Modern Muse — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Charles James ballgown\, silk chiffon\, satin\, netting\, and boning\, 1954-1955\, USA\, gift of Robert Wells in memory of Lisa Kirk.\nThe Museum at FIT is temporarily closed.  \nView the online exhibition here. \nFebruary 7–April 18\, 2020  \n\n\nBallet took its place in the western pantheon of modern high culture during the interwar years of the twentieth century. The ballerina\, the form’s most celebrated practitioner\, blossomed into a revered figure of beauty and glamour\, and her signature costume—the corseted tutu—inspired many of fashion’s leading designers. Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse will illustrate the influence of classical ballet and ballerinas on high fashion from the early 1930s to the late 1970s. It is being organized by Patricia Mears\, deputy director of MFIT. \nThe popularization of classical ballet owes much to the British and Americans. Imperial Russian classical ballet would become the most popular performing art in the United Kingdom during the 1930s and 1940s\, and later\, the United States. At its peak\, from the early 1930s to mid-century\, haute couture looked to classical ballets such as Giselle\, Swan Lake\, and Sleeping Beauty for aesthetic inspiration. Modern ballets performed in leotards and tights would also influence mid-century American active fashions. \nMost of the objects on view will be high fashion garments\, ranging from Parisian couture to British custom-made clothing and American ready-to-wear. Also included will be a small selection of ballet costumes and rehearsal clothing that illustrate the connection between dance costume and fashion.

SUMMARY:Hue Live Online Event: Unearthing Forgotten Histories: A Studio Visit with Noted New York Artist Abigail DeVille
DESCRIPTION:In this virtual Hue Live event\, Hue Managing Editor Alex Joseph visits internationally renowned artist Abigail DeVille at her studio. \nMaintaining a long-standing interest in marginalized people and places\, New York-based Abigail DeVille creates site-specific immersive installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories\, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem. \nDeVille often works with objects and materials sourced from the area surrounding the exhibition site\, and her theatrical aesthetic embodies the phrase\, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Though collected objects are essential to her installations\, DeVille’s priority is the stories her installations can tell. DeVille’s family roots in New York go back at least two generations; her interest in the city\, and her work about it\, is both personal and political. \nAbout Hue Live\nFIT’s Hue Live is a series of intimate conversations featuring the people and stories that define FIT. Starting this spring\, when connecting the FIT community around common interests and pursuits is more important than ever\, Hue’s managing editor Alex Joseph\, will speak with some of FIT’s most talented and influential alumni across a range of industries. \nThis event is free but registration is required; register here.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Power Mode — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Pyer Moss by Kerby Jean-Raymond\, jacket\, fall 2015\, USA\, gift of Pyer Moss.\nThe Museum at FIT is temporarily closed.  \nView the online exhibition here. \nDecember 10\, 2019–May 9\, 2020  \nPower is part identity\, part behavior\, and part physicality. The way we outfit ourselves can play an outsized role in conveying power to others—whether it be the pink “pussy hats” at the 2017 Women’s March or the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coordinated Thom Browne suits during the 2018 NBA playoffs. However\, power is not easily defined. It is political position and economic status\, but also military strength\, sexual authority\, rebellion\, and protest. Each form of power has found sartorial expression in a variety of ways\, from gray flannel suits to latex fetish wear\, and from gilded brocades to distressed jeans. \nPower Mode will explore the role fashion plays in establishing\, reinforcing\, and challenging power dynamics within society. It will include both men’s and women’s clothing from the 18th century to the present\, organized thematically to concentrate on five categories: military\, suits\, status\, rebellion\, and sex. Each section will investigate how certain designs and garments have come to be culturally associated with power\, as well as how their meanings have evolved over time. The exhibition will also examine how fashion designers have interpreted these stylistic archetypes—both to convey and to subvert power. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
