Business unexpectedly evolves into pleasure when Ellie invites three local men to participate in her art. The film puts a devastatingly funny lens on such subjects as success\, ageism\, loneliness\, dating\, collaboration\, and ruthlessness. \nLaurie Simmons is an acclaimed photographer\, known for her intricately staged domestic scenes with dolls\, costumed dancers\, and ventriloquist dummies\, who also makes moving image art\, including 2006’s Meryl Streep–led The Music of Regret. Her work blends psychological\, political\, and conceptual approaches to art making\, transforming photography’s propensity to objectify people (especially women) into a sustained critique of the medium. In My Art\, she takes cues from her daughter [and co-star] Lena Dunham’s brand of acerbic wit and acutely feminist point of view for this comedy of self-realization. He creates large\, geometric sculptures from carefully folded and stacked second-hand clothing. Rafiki is the story of romance that grows between two young women\, Kena and Ziki\, amidst family and political pressures around LGBT rights in Kenya. Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father’s shop and awaits the start of nursing school\, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly\, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood. \nThis screening is brought to you by the FIT Film and Media department\, the FIT Film Club\, and the FIT LGBTQ Alliance. Chaudhry\, Social Sciences\, along with ethnographer Souzeina Mushtaq. Chaudhry and Mushtaq have been working on the issues of nomads and weavers in Kashmir and Tibet for more than a decade\, and recently started working on Yörük community in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. The ongoing visual ethnographic research details the impact of migration and globalization on these nomadic communities and documents their daily lives. It also puts a face to this invisible community and their vanishing culture. \nThe idea of a modern state birthed the notion of citizenship\, which enforced the separation of legal citizens and the “others.” Historically speaking\, nomadic communities did not belong to any marked territory because their lifestyle dictated them to migrate from one place to another in search of pastures. The creation of borders and the idea of belonging to a particular state created a complex identity crisis for nomadic communities\, rendering them invisible in the socio-political scenario of the modern state. \nWith the endless information overload\, the issues of nomads and the weavers get shelved. The individuals are reduced to statistics. This exhibition attempts to humanize nomads and the weavers as they negotiate their changing lifestyles in this globalized world. The ballerina\, the form’s most celebrated practitioner\, blossomed into a revered figure of beauty and glamour\, and her signature costume—the corseted tutu—inspired many of fashion’s leading designers. Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse will illustrate the influence of classical ballet and ballerinas on high fashion from the early 1930s to the late 1970s. It is being organized by Patricia Mears\, deputy director of MFIT. \nThe popularization of classical ballet owes much to the British and Americans. Imperial Russian classical ballet would become the most popular performing art in the United Kingdom during the 1930s and 1940s\, and later\, the United States. At its peak\, from the early 1930s to mid-century\, haute couture looked to classical ballets such as Giselle\, Swan Lake\, and Sleeping Beauty for aesthetic inspiration.
