SUMMARY:Exhibition: Michael Katz: Art as Fashion — Opens
DESCRIPTION:October 11–November 15\, 2019 \nThe Art and Design Gallery presents the work of the late fashion designer Michael Katz\, whose exuberant hand-painted creations are part of the collection of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and have been worn by luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey and Mick Jagger. \nKatz was a friend of FIT’s Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design program for over 20 years. He spoke to classes\, juried windows\, and donated original work to the program’s wardrobe collection\, allowing students to use current luxury brand fashion for their displays and portfolios.  Each of Katz’s garments was one of a kind\, using hand-painted silk and silk-screened fabrics he used to create his collections. Katz also designed original patterns\, which he also donated to the college. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Expressions of Civility — Closes
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of FIT’s commitment to creating a civil\, inclusive campus for all\, the annual faculty and staff exhibition will include student work for the first time. \nThe exhibition will explore: What does it mean to be civil in a world that is increasingly not? In an era where personal attacks and inflammatory positions have superseded dialogue and debate\, how do we seek to understand that which separates us and builds connections that increase empathy\, inclusivity\, knowledge and community strength? Civility—and the ability to reconcile our differences for the greater good—is at the very root of a democratic society. It spurs forward movement\, it moves us past our points of conflict\, it is what fuels progress. Ultimately\, it’s the only thing that ever has. \nArtwork will be on view in the following locations: \nLynn and Carl Goldstein Gallery\, Feldman Center\, Ninth Floor (faculty/staff work): November 14\, 2018–October 2019 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth and Sixth floors (student work): November 19\, 2018–March 31\, 2019 \nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT (students/faculty/staff): November 19\, 2018–January 26\, 2019

Bullet Resistant Gown\, 11 layers of Kevlar\, cotton sateen\, by Victoria Wong. \nOctober 15–November 1 \nPOCreatives\, student recipients of an FIT Collaboration Grant\, curated the exhibition For Someone Who Looks Like Me\, which provides a platform for students of color from any major to show their work. A companion documentary of the same name will be shown on a loop as part of the exhibition. In the film\, four FIT students who are creatives of color share how their cultural backgrounds influence their creativity and the issues they face as people of color in their respective art fields. \nWhen POCreatives wrote their proposal for the Collaboration Grant\, they ultimately wanted to create a space for people like them—creatives of color—to be seen. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
