SUMMARY:Exhibition: Threads of Bondage\, Invisibility\, and Style Influence: Hidden African American Contributions to American Couture (Revisited) — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 11–March 31 \nIt is estimated that between 1525 and 1866 some 12.5 to 15 million African men\, women\, and children were violently forced from Western and Central Africa into brutal captivity to provide labor for the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 450\,000 of the 10.5 million who survived the overseas voyages were sent to North America to be enslaved. Within this environment developed highly skilled and valued enslaved dressmakers and seamstresses. The exhibition is in tribute to the many unrecognized women who but for their bondage would have been recognized as “designers.” \nItems on view are provided courtesy of the Leonard Davis collection. \nThe exhibition is located on the west side of the fourth floor corridor connecting the Business and Liberal Arts Center and the Dubinsky Student Center.

SUMMARY:FIT Authors: Sharon Rothman
DESCRIPTION:At this FIT Authors event\, Assistant Professor Sharon Rothman talks about her book The Fashion Designer’s Sketchbook. \nThe Fashion Designer’s Sketchbook is a step-by-step guide to making and using sketchbooks as an experimental design lab to visually explain your design ideas. Three distinct types of sketchbook\, each representing a different phase in the design process\, evolve from initial inspiration journal\, to design development sketchbook\, to the job-search presentation sketchbook as portfolio companion. The power of a sketchbook lies in visual storytelling. In these pages\, professional designers and student contributors tell the visual story of the creative process with their unique sketchbook examples\, and concept-to-design experimentations\, throughout a range of aesthetic levels and target markets. Individual editing scenarios\, sketching styles\, and graphic strategies show how to project aesthetics into a cohesive sketchbook presentation. \nFIT Authors is a collaboration between the Faculty Senate Library Committee and the FIT Library to showcase the scholarship and creativity of the FIT community\, as well as to promote our collections. Each semester\, the Faculty Senate Library Committee collects submissions from authors within the FIT community (faculty\, staff\, and alumni) to create informative profiles. The FIT Library features these authors and their works in a rotating display\, and hosts an FIT Authors event twice a semester. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:'A Night at the Garden': What We Can Learn from a 1939 Nazi Rally
DESCRIPTION:As part of part of FIT’s annual Holocaust commemoration\, the college will screen the 2019 Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Short Subject A Night at the Garden and host a discussion with director Marshall Curry. \nIn 1939\, 20\,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism—an event largely forgotten from American history. A Night at the Garden\, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night\, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'Beautiful Things\,' with Giorgio Ferrero
DESCRIPTION:The Film and Media Screening Series will present Beautiful Things (2017) with director Giorgio Ferrero; he will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nBeautiful Things is a symphonic documentary journey into our obsessive consumerism. The film follows four men who work in isolation at remote scientific and industrial sites around the world. Like monks\, they carry out their daily tasks in silence and solitude inside steel and concrete temples\, creating products that will soon enter the capitalist cycle of production\, transport\, consumption. It won Best Italian Film ARCA (2017). \nGiorgio Ferrero is an Italian composer\, director\, sound editor\, and photographer. His sound and visual installations have been shown at venues such as the Museo del Novecento\, MAXXI\, Biennials in Bordeaux and Lisbon\, and the Accademia Gallery in Florence. With Federico Biasin (co-director and director of photography of Beautiful Things\, Denoise\, and Riverbero) and Rodolfo Mongitore (co-author of the soundtracks) he leads the multidisciplinary studio MYBOSSWAS in Turin. He has composed and produced soundtracks for dozens of films\, theatrical performances\, and installations. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the Diversity Council\, the Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll screenings are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Denim Day
DESCRIPTION:For this event we ask that all members of the FIT community make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. The information provided here is taken from denimdayinfo.org. \n“Denim Day is a worldwide initiative to prevent sexual violence and to enforce the message that ‘consent has nothing to do with what I wear.’ This campaign originally began in 1997 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a sexual assault conviction because the justices felt ‘the victim’s jeans were so tight\, she had to help remove them\, thereby consenting to sex.’ The following day the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then\, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol to protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.” \nSexual Assault Awareness Education is brought to you by the Campus Anti-violence Education Group and sponsored by the FIT Security Advisory Committee\, Division of Enrollment Management & Student Success\, Department of Athletics and Recreation\, Residence Hall Association\, and more. \nJoin the conversation online: #SAAM

This will take place in the FIT Dining Hall\, located in the Dubinsky Student Center. \n5:30–7 pm: Hear from renowned DJ and activist Zeke Thomas as he speaks out in support of survivors of sexual violence and shares his personal story of surviving rape and overcoming trauma in the hopes of sparking positive change. This event will take place in the Katie Murphy Amphitheatre. (Note: This location has changed from the Haft Theater.)  \nThis event is part of FIT’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities.
