SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Mary Katrantzou\, printed\, embroidered\, and beaded dress with net overlay\, spring 2019\, England\, museum purchase\, 2023.52.1\nFebruary 19–April 20\, 2025\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\nThe Museum at FIT \nFashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities is an inventive exhibition that provides the first in-depth exploration of the fascinating connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. Also known as wunderkammern in German\, cabinets of curiosities can be traced back to the early 16th century. They were precursors to the modern museum\, and many included examples of clothing. The exhibition features nearly 200 garments and accessories\, almost exclusively selected from MFIT’s permanent collection\, which are inspired by the breadth of objects collected within the cabinets. The objects on view\, many of which are shown for the first time\, are meant to pique curiosity through their rarity\, beauty\, or originality. \nAn introductory gallery examines the history of cabinets of curiosities\, explaining their significance to the Age of Exploration (15th to 17th centuries)\, their ties to colonialism\, and the need for contemporary museums to be more inclusive and informed about the objects they acquire. It also highlights the interconnections between curiosity\, creativity\, and collecting. A dress by Mary Katrantzou dates to her 10th anniversary collection in 2019\, in which she expressed the urge “to amass like objects of a particular kind\, to record\, to study and identify\, to protect and cherish.” Its intricate patterning includes butterflies and seashells\, both of which are regularly featured in the cabinets. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public. Find out more on The Museum at FIT’s website.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Social Responsibilities of Museums — Closes
DESCRIPTION:January 21–April 20\, 2025 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fourth Floor Exhibit Case \nStudents in FIT’s Art History and Museum Professions program reflected on the social responsibilities of museums in recognition of Black History Month. The Art History and Museum Professions major prepares students for positions in museums and other art institutions\, with a focus on collections management\, development\, education\, public relations\, rights and reproductions\, visitor services\, special events\, and exhibitions. By showcasing books related to five temporary exhibitions hosted by five different New York City museums\, this exhibition\, held at the Gladys Marcus Library’s fourth-floor exhibit case\, hopes to highlight the work being done to uplift marginalized communities. \nShows like the Whitney’s Edges of Ailey and The Met’s Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt 1876–Now provide a look into the world of Black artists and how they have shaped so much of American art and music\, yet their names often remain unspoken. History is littered with forgotten voices\, but large cultural centers can forever change the way something is remembered. Museums hold power\, and with that power comes an obligation to the communities that support them. The types of artwork and artists that museums choose for exhibitions reveal what is valued in society. By highlighting Black and Latin American artists\, New York museums prove that they understand the responsibility they hold\, as they seek to include those who have been on the sidelines for far too long. \nAn opening reception will be held Monday\, February 24\, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. \nCurator: Lisa Yen\nFaculty Advisor: Professor Kyunghee Pyun\, Assistant Chair\, Art History and Museum Professions\nGraphic Designer: Lisa Yen\nContributors: Thursday Abad\, Samantha Barnes\, Ashley Villegas Hernandez\, JaDea Houston\, Cassandra (Cassie) Hughes (students in the Art History and Museum Professions program) \nThis event is part of the FIT Diversity Collective’s Black History Month activities; for a full schedule of activities\, visit fitnyc.edu/blackhistory. \nThis exhibition is for the FIT community only.

SUMMARY:Sounds\, Silences\, and Echoes: Listening for World War II and the Holocaust from North Africa
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christopher Silver\, McGill University. \nThe FIT Holocaust Commemoration Committee and the Diversity Collective host “Sounds\, Silences\, and Echoes: Listening for World War II and the Holocaust from North Africa\,” presented by Dr. Christopher Silver. \nOn the eve of the Second World War\, half a million Jews called North Africa home. Among them\, were some of the most prominent Arabophone recording artists of the interwar period. With the collapse of France’s Third Republic in 1940\, Jewish communities from across Morocco\, Algeria\, and Tunisia\, already subject to the strictures of European colonialism\, now found themselves contending with and confronting fascist rule. For musicians\, this also meant removal from the airwaves and the stage. If the Maghrib has long been considered marginal to the historiography joining World War II to the Holocaust\, this talk considers the implications of bringing the “periphery” to the center of the narrative. To do so\, it amplifies an element too often neglected by historians: the realm of the aural. In listening for wartime radio broadcasts and concerts\, following the circulation of phonograph records and songbooks\, and attending to the sounds and silences of the era\, we will ask what music remembers of a history long forgotten. \nChristopher Silver is the Segal Family Associate Professor in Jewish History and Culture at McGill University. Recipient of awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada\, the American Academy of Jewish Research\, the American Institute for Maghrib Studies\, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections\, and the Posen Foundation\, Silver’s scholarship on history\, music\, and the Jewish-Muslim relationship has appeared in many journals including the International Journal of Middle East Studies and Jewish Social Studies. His book Recording History: Jews\, Muslims\, and Music Across Twentieth Century North Africa (Stanford University Press\, 2022) was awarded the L. Carl Brown Book Prize by the American Institute for Maghrib Studies for outstanding book in North African studies (2023) and was recently translated into Arabic. He is also the founder and curator of the website Gharamophone.com\, a digital archive of North African records from the first half of the 20th century. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER ONLINE.
