SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabric of Survival: Images of the Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Esther Nisenthal Krinitz\, “Coming to America\, June 10\, 1949\,” 1996. Photo courtesy of Art and Remembrance.\nApril 8–18\, 2024\nFeldman Center Lobby \nIn recognition of Holocaust Memorial Day\, which begins on May 5\, the college’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee has invited the nonprofit Art and Remembrance to share the work of Holocaust survivor and fabric artist Esther Nisenthal Krinitz. \nIn 1977\, at the age of 50\, Esther Nisenthal Krinitz began creating works of fabric art to tell her story of survival. Trained as a seamstress\, but with no training in art\, she ultimately created 36 remarkable fabric pictures of strong\, vivid images and folk-art realism\, meticulously stitching the narrative of her story beneath each picture. \nThis exhibition recreates images you can see in detail on the Art and Remembrance website\, which is dedicated to Nisenthal Krinitz’s legacy. Find it here. \nThis exhibition is sponsored by the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences\, the School of Art and Design\, and Enrollment Management and Student Success. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Globalization of Korean Hallyu and Cool Japan: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:Please join Vincent Quan\, associate professor and assistant chair of Fashion Business Management\, and Yuniya (Yuni) Kawamura\, professor of Social Sciences–Sociology\, for this discussion on the reach of Korean and Japanese culture. Asian fashion and pop culture have been sweeping the world for over 50 years. \nIn the 1970s\, Japanese designers arrived in Paris and revolutionized the industry by transforming the meaning of fashion with the diffusion of anime and manga as Cool Japan. Korean pop culture and entertainment since the 1990s\, known as Hallyu\, expanded rapidly through social media and reached global audiences as well. Much success has been evinced by the popularity of K-brands within music\, drama\, and technology. Both the Japanese and Korean governments made attempts to use fashion and pop culture as “soft power” for their cultural diplomacy. \nThis discussion will compare and contrast the fashion and pop culture sectors in Japan and Korea in their successful attempts at globalization by delving into the past and present states of the fashion\, entertainment\, and related sectors. \nThis event is for the FIT community only; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Fashion Design AAS Exhibition: Denim Divine — Closes
DESCRIPTION:April 3–21\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nFor the capstone projects of the spring 2024 Fashion Design AAS program\, students were tasked with creating garments using only denim fabric. As a result\, the exhibition focuses on simple forms and techniques\, encouraging innovation\, creativity\, and craftsmanship. Included are works selected for Critic Awards by industry mentors who have worked alongside students throughout the semester. \nDenim’s appeal is universal. From day to night\, from workwear to runway\, denim transcends gender\, age\, and class. Its durability has made it an essential part of our everyday life. Denim Divine is a tribute to this denim’s timeless appeal and enduring influence. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talk: Michelle Lawton on Moderating a Love Affair With Food
DESCRIPTION:Packaging Design Adjunct Professor Michelle Lawton will present on her book\, Moderating a Love Affair with Food: 10 Tips for Mindful Eating and Drinking. \nModerating a Love Affair with Food: 10 Tips to Mindful Eating and Drinking is an easy-to-read and entertaining guidebook for the industry pro\, the food- and wine-obsessed\, “foodie\,” home cook\, or any eater who adores food and drink but is looking for a little help with moderating. The book offers 10 tips for self-control based on a food pro’s personal experience eating and drinking at home\, work\, and in social settings. The book covers subjects of self-care\, moderating alcohol\, cooking mindfully\, eating out in restaurants and navigating the many tempting social situations we find ourselves in\, and the expectations that others can put on us. \nThroughout the book\, Lawton shares funny anecdotes about everyday life and examples of ways to pay attention to our mood and surroundings. What’s different about this book? There are so many recipe books on the joy of cooking. And so many apps and programs on dieting or abstinence. This book is about loving yourself enough to enjoy everything in balance. Lawton draws on her experiences working in the food and wine industries\, beginning as a corporate brand manager for super-premium Italian wines and Champagnes. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; join by Webex via the FIT Authors website.
