SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fast Forward: Selected Work by Illustration Faculty Alumni — Opens
DESCRIPTION:August 15–September 25\nThe Gallery \nArt and Design Gallery \nFast Forward features the work of 13 FIT BFA and AAS alumni who are also current or very recent FIT Illustration Department faculty members. After attending FIT\, these artists have taken quite different professional paths and have returned to FIT to share their experiences with the students. The work shown here is a mix of commercial commissions and portfolio pieces—a rich diversity of concepts\, media\, and applications. Included are fashion\, tattoo\, editorial\, and book illustrations\, as well as personal artworks. The range and variety of the work reflects the depth and breath of the Illustration department curriculum—a curriculum that stresses core skills and inspires students with diverse creative sensibilities. \nWe are honored to show the work of Ed Soyka\, who served as the chair of the Illustration Department from 2000 to 2021. Professor Soyka hired many of these artists and worked to shape the current curriculum. \nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Shoes: Anatomy\, Identity\, Magic — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Tom Ford\, evening sandals\, spring 2012\, USA\, gift of Tom Ford International\, 2013.10.1\nSeptember 1–December 31\, 2022\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery \nShoes: Anatomy\, Identity\, Magic explores our physical\, social\, and psychological relationship with shoes. The exhibition begins with a pair of baby shoes\, indicating how shoes accompany us on the journey of life. \nThe theme of anatomy emphasizes how we stand and move differently when we wear\, say\, sneakers rather than stilettos. Peep-toe shoes and thigh-high boots also draw attention to different parts of our anatomy. \nThe theme of identity emphasizes how we tend to associate different shoe styles and brands with different types of people. High-heeled shoes have long been associated with erotic femininity\, and stilettos\, in particular\, are identified with the femme fatale. By contrast\, rubber-soled sneakers were invented for sports\, so they are identified with athletes. \nThe theme of magic emphasizes how we may unconsciously believe that the right pair of shoes will change our lives\, as Cinderella’s glass slippers captured the attention of a prince. Because professional athletes often wear sneakers\, we may decide to buy a pair of Nike Air Jordans\, hoping\, like Lil’ Bow Wow in the film Like Mike\, that they will “magically” enhance our physical prowess. \nThe exhibition features more than 300 of the 5\,000 pairs of shoes\, boots\, sandals\, and sneakers in the museum’s permanent collection\, aka “the closet.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:ARTSpeak: Yashua Klos
DESCRIPTION:Photo of Klos by Andrew Kist. “Your Strength Is In Your Shadow” (2021) by Yashua Klos. Image courtesy of UTA Artist Space. \nIn his multimedia practice\, Yashua Klos explores themes of identity\, memory\, and African Americans’ relationship to American labor. His large-scale works are created from the intricate formation of woodblock prints\, representing ideas of Blackness through multi-dimensional\, fragmented portraits. Unlike traditional collage arranged from ready-made source material\, Klos creates all his collage material through woodblock printing and monotypes. His work reimagines the Black body as an alchemical being\, surviving and existing within intertwined networks of history\, myth\, and lived reality. \nYashua Klos was born in 1971 in Chicago\, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. His work has been shown in museums and galleries across the U.S. and abroad\, including the Studio Museum of Harlem; What If The World Gallery in Johannesburg\, South Africa; Tilton Gallery\, NY; and UTA Artist Space\, Los Angeles\, CA. He has been awarded artist residences at Skowkegan\, The Vermont Studio Center\, and Bemis\, and was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Fellowship and a NYFA grant. \nThis program is presented by the Fine Arts Department and has been made possible by a generous grant from Susan Daykin. \nThis event is free and open to the public; FIT requires face masks be worn by all audience members.
