SUMMARY:New Curating: Justice\, Museums\, and the Power of the Grand Narrative
DESCRIPTION:Three panelists engage in a conversation on innovative aspects and new ways of curating histories and art. Learn about exciting new initiatives and directions to diversify traditional displays in art galleries and museums. How has curating changed in recent years\, and how have art galleries and museums with traditional curatorial roles focused on specific periods or arts and cultures responded? How can we reach audiences in a meaningful way to engage with objects and histories? \nLed by Art History and Museum Professions Department Junior Joi Berry (’23) and supported through a Grant for a Black Futures sponsored by FIT project\, this conversation builds upon the excitement and enthusiasm created by past exhibitions curated by Berry. View Berry’s Black Futures exhibition here.  \nThis event is part of FIT’s Black History Month activities. Find more at fitnyc.edu/blackhistory. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Globally Connected @ FIT: Designed for the Future: Creating with the Planet in Mind
DESCRIPTION:Traditionally the fashion industry has operated on through a linear economy\, following the take-make-waste trend for products. Our current climate crisis demands a shift in societal patterns\, creation and consumption. The shift to a circular economy offers a promising solution to waste reduction and resource preservation. FIT alumni Riley Anderson-Lusher (FIT ‘20)\, founder of Guilt Free Goods and a former Cultural Fellow\, and professor Todd Blumenthal\, who teaches Sustainability in Merchandising at FIT\, are in a conversation with Camila Quiroga and Stephanie Baljet\, Cultural Fellows at FIT. \nRiley Lusher\, Fashion Design ’20; OUR CHOICE\, visual designer; Choose2B Inspirational Apparel\, operations management \nRiley is a designer and maker working to explore the interconnectedness of all beings\, and create work that honors and respects these relationships. She would like to shift her central focus of creation from simply lessening her environmental impact to actually benefiting all beings and the environment from her work’s inception. She enjoys learning new trades\, from carpentry\, to web development\, to 3D rendering. Regardless of any professional title or position\, Riley is a passionate problem-solver\, designer\, and maker. Moving forward she hopes to be able to harness these passions in ways that will promote growth and vitality. \nTodd Blumenthal\, assistant professor\, Fashion Business Management \nA visionary leader and master storyteller\, Todd teaches with a highly effective balance of business skills\, innovative creativity\, an entrepreneurial mindset\, and refined aesthetics. Throughout his corporate career\, his focus is on the training and development of the special hard and soft skills and competencies necessary in the New Economy for professional team and management development. For more than 25 years in the fashion industry\, Todd has partnered with global brands including: Nike\, Victoria’s Secret\, The Gap\, and Ralph Lauren developing an expertise for sustainable product commercialization. \n\nAbout Globally Connected @ FIT \n\nGlobally Connected @ FIT is a series of 45-minute virtual discussions led by students\, faculty\, and alumni to advance global education at FIT in our world with limited mobility. The major themes are fashion\, art\, sustainability\, racial equity\, and life during the pandemic around the world. Hosted by the Office of International Programs and the Cultural Fellows\, and the History of Art Department. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Asian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Vivienne Tam\, dress\, spring 1998\, USA\, gift of Vivienne Tam\, 98.50.1\nMarch 2–27\nGallery FIT \nAsian Americans in New York Fashion: Design\, Labor\, Innovation celebrates the Asian American community’s diverse contributions to the fashion industry. The recent rise of violent\, racially motivated attacks against Asian Americans in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need to increase support and awareness around the complex narratives and expansive achievements of this community. New York City is a fashion capital with a large and diverse Asian American community whose members contribute to every aspect of fashion production\, from manufacturing to creative design. This exhibition does not attempt to represent the entire Asian American experience; instead\, it highlights the depth and variety of Asian American design through object-based analysis. The exhibition examines topics such as labor and process in addition to exploring design motivation. \nThis exhibition is presented by students in FIT’s Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program.  This program builds knowledge in fashion and textile history\, object conservation\, and exhibition theory over the course of two years. During their second year\, students utilize the interdisciplinary skills they have acquired through the program to collaborate with The Museum at FIT\, developing and installing an exhibition of fashion objects from MFIT’s collection. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public; visit the exhibition webpage for details.

SUMMARY:David Mills: Boneyarn: Poems About the History of Slavery in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Poet\, performer\, and educator David Mills will read from and reflect upon the research behind his recent collection\, Boneyarn\, the first-ever book of poems about slavery in New York City. He will answer questions moderated by Dr. Amy Lemmon and Dr. Kathrine Varnes\, both of the English and Communication Studies Department. \nThe city holds the oldest and largest slave cemetery in the United States—the African Burial Ground—which was open from 1712 to 1795 and is located in Wall Street’s shadows. Fifteen thousand enslaved and free Blacks\, some Native Americans\, and poor whites are buried there. Mills creatively “excavates” the tragedies and triumphs of New York’s enslaved and free Black community. He writes about those who toiled as cooks\, childhood chimney sweeps\, sailed the Atlantic\, fought in the Revolutionary War\, maintained African traditions when burying the dead\, built the “wall” where Wall Street gets its name\, and regrettably were dehumanized in life and sometimes desecrated in death. \nThe collection also includes a suite of poems dedicated to Jupiter Hammon; born into slavery on Long Island\, New York\, Hammon was the first Black poet published in North America. \nThis event will provide a sense of how research and creativity can move us toward a sense of healing from collective trauma. \nThe book will be available at Barnes & Noble at FIT Bookstore for purchase. \n \n\nATTENDEE Information\nJoin link:\nhttps://fitnyc.webex.com/fitnyc/j.php?MTID=ma98483502389675c3ff6482a73b22123Webinar number:\n2633 559 0838 \nWebinar password:\nBHktU3SrC53 (24588377 from phones) \nJoin by phone\n+1-646-992-2010 United States Toll (New York City) \nAccess code: 263 355 90838 \n\nDavid Mills \nDavid Mills holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College and is author of published four collections of poetry: The Dream Detective\, The Sudden Country\, After Mistic (Massachusetts slavery poems) and the bestselling Boneyarn. He has also received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts\, Breadloaf\, the Lannan Foundation\, the Queens Council on the Arts\, the Bronx Council on the Arts\, Washington College and The American Antiquarian Society. He lived in Langston Hughes’ landmark Harlem home for three years (was a recipient of the Langston Hughes Society Award) and wrote the audio script for MacArthur Fellow Deborah Willis’s curated exhibition Reflections in Black:100 Years of Black Photography. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Reinvention and Restlessness: Fashion in the Nineties — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Moschino Couture suit\, printed rayon\, 1990\, Italy\, museum purchase\, 2009.1.4.\nJanuary 19–April 17\, 2022 \nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery \nMinimalism. Retro revivals. Deconstruction. The rejuvenation of haute couture. These are just a few of the concepts that have come to define 1990s fashion\, which was not easily characterized by a handful of silhouettes or the dictates of a few designers. As fashion editor Stephen Gan wrote in 1997\, “To focus on one current look or to obsess over the rise and fall of hemlines is to miss out on the wonder and variety in fashion today.” \nReinvention and Restlessness: Fashion in the Nineties is organized by Colleen Hill\, curator of costume and accessories\, and features more than seventy-five looks from Alexander McQueen\, Hussein Chalayan\, Gucci\, Calvin Klein\, Helmut Lang\, Maison Martin Margiela\, Prada\, XULY.Bët\, and many others. The exhibition centers on designers who challenged the expected appearance or workings of high fashion\, and who played an important role in laying the foundation for fashion of the twenty-first century. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a book of the same title\, published by Rizzoli Electa. More than 150 images by photographers such as Mark Borthwick\, Corinne Day\, Patrick Demarchelier\, Craig McDean\, Nick Knight\, David Sims\, and Ellen Von Unwerth illustrate some of the most important fashions of this dynamic decade. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
