SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Future Is Immersive — Closes
DESCRIPTION:March 15–April 26  (extended to May 2) \nThis immersive exhibition at FIT will show how artistic virtual reality can change how patients react to treatment. FIT artists and technicians\, using Google Tilt Brush\, have created artwork\, which will be on view\, in a “fourth dimension.” VR and art impact the patient experience during treatment and beyond. \nArtist Tom Christopher‘s entire studio where the VR paintings were created\, with the help of FIT students\, will be recreated at FIT for a complete immersive experience. A visitor will also be able to put on a VR headset and be transported to a brave new world of artistic virtual reality that begins with a pencil and ends up calming and distracting patients\, relieving the sensation of pain and is sometimes a tool for healing completely. \n\nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabric In Fashion — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Traina-Norell\, “Indian sari” silk brocade dress\, circa 1955\, gift of Mildred Morton.\nDecember 4\, 2018–May 4\, 2019  \nFabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years. The examination of textiles is often separated from that of the fashionable silhouette\, yet historically\, textiles were as important as the cut of clothing in keeping up with current fashion. This exhibition will delve into the mechanics of textiles\, looking at how fibers and weaves build the materiality of fashion. It will also explore the cultural influence of fabric. The Western world’s demand for fashionable textiles of silk\, cotton\, wool\, and synthetics has had enormous repercussions across the globe. \nFabric In Fashion will highlight both clothing and flat textiles from the museum’s permanent collection\, examining how the physical properties of specific fabrics determine the way a piece of clothing interacts with the body\, as well as how the design and cultural associations of textiles reveal the social motivations that drive fashion forward. The exhibition is organized by Elizabeth Way\, assistant curator of costume.

SUMMARY:Annual Fashion and Textile Studies Research Symposium: Clothing as Craft: People\, Process\, Product
DESCRIPTION:Craft in clothing has been used to solidify communities and identities for millennia\, emphasizing tradition\, promoting resistance and social change\, or purely serving as a structure for creating art. In what ways do clothing and craft converge? From couture’s handwork to homemade everyday clothing\, both within the fashion system and in purposeful anti-fashion\, clothing provides a canvas for craft expression. The artisan’s time\, labor\, and even physical body are intimately connected to the final product\, prompting questions regarding the extent of handwork necessary to qualify as craft. \nIn this symposium\, students in FIT’s MA program in Fashion and Textile Studies will present papers on a range of historical and contemporary topics\, investigating craft objects\, makers\, and practices. From smocking in 19th-century Dress Reform to 20th-century home-crochet patterns\, from couture embroidery by Lesage to punk DIY\, these studies will explore the ways in which concepts of artisanship affect our notions of clothing’s value and authenticity. \nOrganized and presented by students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice Master of Arts program\, School of Graduate Studies. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 13–May 15 \nThis exhibition showcases select works by FIT students in the team-taught course “Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art.” Through guided training\, students gain knowledge of key concepts\, methods\, and techniques of calligraphy and brush pen writing. They also receive a thorough background in the history of the art form and its significance in Chinese. \nBy studying the history of calligraphy and its close connection to poetry\, painting\, and the dissemination of Taoist and Buddhist teachings\, students deepen their understanding of why calligraphy has been considered the highest art form in Chinese culture\, and how calligraphy has developed from a functional communications medium to a deeply expressive art form that combines personal feelings\, situations\, physical conditions\, and the immediate environment. \nCurated by Bing Hu and Chen Zhang; video installation curated by Mario E. Valero.

SUMMARY:Art Market Studies Exhibition: Beyond Species
DESCRIPTION:May 21–24; opening reception: Tuesday\, May 21\, 7–9 pm\n72 Warren St.\, New York\, NY \nBeyond Species is an off-campus exhibition curated by graduating students in the MA in Art Market Studies program. \nChanges to human interactions with the environment and advances in technology have made interspecies relationships more precarious by challenging the traditional hierarchy of species. What is the role of humans vis-à-vis animals\, machines\, and other humans? Is it possible to find balance\, harmony\, and a common language? \nBeyond Species highlights nine international artists who use a variety of techniques\, media\, and subject matter to investigate permutations of speciesism\, a problem that contemporary art\, in essence\, can’t ignore. These artists include Pindar van Arman\, Hannah Rose Berry\, Ambrus Gero\, Vitaly Komar\, Kuang-Yi Ku\, Christine Rai\, Richard Sheng\, Rosary Solimanto\, and Wei-Ping Wang. Each artist uses his or her own philosophy to determine what it means to be human and where our interactions with both animals and AI technology are headed. Beyond Species brings different perspectives to the exploration of interspecies relationships\, proposing a range of reactions to these questions\, from ensuring that technology remains in the service of humanity to non-hierarchical collaboration among all species and harmonious coexistence. \nThe opening reception on Tuesday\, May 21\, 7–9 pm is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Minimalism/Maximalism — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Ruiz de la Prada\, dress\, spring/summer 2014\, Madrid\, gift of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.\nMay 28–November 16\, 2019  \n\nFashion is a world of extremes\, where sartorial expression ranges from minimalist to maximalist aesthetics. Some designers may identify almost exclusively with one over the other; Calvin Klein\, for instance\, was known for fashion minimalism. However\, the cyclical nature of fashion moves us through design periods alternately dominated by a minimalist or maximalist aesthetic\, reaffirming Isaac Newton’s third law of motion: for every action\, there is an equal and opposite reaction. \n\nIn fashion\, minimalism and maximalism define two extremes along the design spectrum. Minimalism\, the aesthetic of less-is-more\, is based on a reductive approach to design\, and celebrates purity and restraint. Maximalism\, on the other hand\, accentuates the beauty of excess and redundancy. While these may be considered aesthetic opposites\, both seek to challenge perception\, and as forms of expression\, they serve as indicators of the sociocultural and economic zeitgeist of the given time period. \nMinimalism/Maximalism explores the interplay between minimalist and maximalist aesthetics as they have been and continue to be expressed through fashion. Beginning in the 18th century\, the exhibition examines how these aesthetic viewpoints are expressed over time and move fashion forward. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
