SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fashion Unraveled — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Detail of ensemble by XULY.Bët\, repurposed acrylic sweaters\, fall 1994\, gift of XULY.Bët.\nMay 25–November 17\, 2018  \nFashion Unraveled will examine the concepts of imperfection and incompletion in fashion. Garments that are altered\, unfinished\, or deconstructed\, in addition to clothing that shows signs of wear\, will highlight the aberrant beauty in flawed objects. Unless such imperfections are intentional—as they are in the case of deconstructed fashion—these garments are often overlooked in museum collections. This exhibition will include a selection of objects from the museum’s permanent collection\, highlighting objects that are not only visually compelling\, but that may also tell intriguing stories about their makers and/or wearers. \nIt is only in recent years that imperfect or inauthentic objects have been given greater consideration\, as interest in their “biographies” has grown. Signs of repeated wear\, shortened hemlines\, and careful mends can be found even on haute couture garments\, and they highlight the lasting economic and emotional worth of many clothes within museum collections. These findings—which are often unseen and unknown by museum visitors—challenge the concept of fashion as a strictly ephemeral\, disposable commodity. Fashion Unraveled will also reveal how the appearance of aged clothing\, with its flaws and signs of decay\, has been embraced by many designers as an aesthetic choice\, furthering the reconstruction of notions about beauty and value in fashion.

SUMMARY:Modernism à la Mode: A Presentation on Fashion and Literature
DESCRIPTION:Author Elizabeth Sheehan\nThe Department of English and Communications Studies and the School of Liberal Arts present a panel discussion about fashion and literature with special guest Elizabeth Sheehan\, author and professor at Oregon State University. \n4–5 pm: Guest speaker: Elizabeth Sheehan’s Presentation and Discussion \n5–6 pm: Panel discussion and Q & A with three FIT scholars: \n\nSarah Byrd\, School of Graduate Studies\, FIT\nJustine De Young\, History of Art Department\, FIT\nElizabeth Sheehan\, English and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University\nJeri Zulli\, Assistant Professor\, English and Communication Studies\, FIT\n\nEveryone is welcome to join for one or both hours.\n\nDr. Elizabeth Sheehan\, an assistant professor of English and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University\, is the author of Modernism a la Mode: Fashion and the Ends of Literature (Cornell University Press\, 2018)\, and co-editor of Cultures of Femininity in Modern Fashion. She has produced groundbreaking publications on modernism\, fashion\, feminist theory\, race\, affect\, photography\, and magazines. \nModernism à la Mode argues that fashion describes why and how literary modernism matters in its own historical moment and ours. Bringing together texts\, textiles\, and theories of dress\, Elizabeth Sheehan shows that writers\, including Virginia Woolf\, D.H. Lawrence\, W.E.B. Du Bois\, Nella Larsen\, and F. Scott Fitzgerald\, turned to fashion to understand what their own stylized works could do in the context of global capital\, systemic violence\, and social transformation. Modernists engage with fashion as a mood\, a set of material objects\, and a target of critique\, and\, in doing so\, anticipate and address contemporary debates centered on the uses of literature and literary criticism amidst the supposed crisis in the humanities. A modernist affect with a purpose\, no less. By engaging modernism à la mode—that is\, contingently\, contextually\, and in light of contemporary concerns—this book offers an alternative to the often-untenable distinctions between strong or weak\, suspicious or reparative\, and politically activist or quietist approaches to literature\, which frame current debates about literary methodology. As fashion helps us to describe what modernist texts do\, it enables us to do more with modernism as a form of inquiry\, perception\, and critique. Fashion and modernism are interwoven forms of inquiry\, perception\, and critique\, writes Sheehan. It is fashion that puts the work of early twentieth-century writers in conversation with 21st-century theories of emotion\, materiality\, animality\, beauty\, and history. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabric In Fashion — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Traina-Norell\, “Indian sari” silk brocade dress\, circa 1955\, gift of Mildred Morton.\nDecember 4\, 2018–May 4\, 2019  \nFabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years. The examination of textiles is often separated from that of the fashionable silhouette\, yet historically\, textiles were as important as the cut of clothing in keeping up with current fashion. This exhibition will delve into the mechanics of textiles\, looking at how fibers and weaves build the materiality of fashion. It will also explore the cultural influence of fabric. The Western world’s demand for fashionable textiles of silk\, cotton\, wool\, and synthetics has had enormous repercussions across the globe. \nFabric In Fashion will highlight both clothing and flat textiles from the museum’s permanent collection\, examining how the physical properties of specific fabrics determine the way a piece of clothing interacts with the body\, as well as how the design and cultural associations of textiles reveal the social motivations that drive fashion forward. The exhibition is organized by Elizabeth Way\, assistant curator of costume.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: View Finder
DESCRIPTION:December 7–14 \nThe name View Finder is derived from the tool used on a camera for framing the composition of an image. As photographers\, there’s no one right way to take a photo and what to take it with; however\, the one consistency is our viewfinders. Regardless of whether it’s a full frame digital SLR\, a medium-format film camera\, or simply an iPhone\, this is how we all see our independent worlds and how we choose to capture them. \nView Finder features work by the junior class in the Photography BFA program at FIT. As part of the Photographic Concepts and Exhibition course\, this show is an opportunity to exhibit the work created this semester without boundaries on presentation. It highlights the topics the class has covered\, such as tableau\, intimate narrative\, and deadpan. In addition to this\, students have also considered different ways in which to manifest our creations for the public from large-scale printing to handheld installation. As artists\, they were challenged with producing content that not only fulfills the requirements for the curriculum\, but also articulates our each student’s style and expression. \nFor this exhibition\, two outside creators were also invited to participate: course professor Elizabeth Bick and notable photographer John Cyr. \nProfessor Bick’s work is relevant to the show because of her tableau aesthetic. Her pieces are in collaboration with an artist that makes work out of old hotel bed sheets. She’s capturing the movement of the sheets and artist in a stop motion format. \nCyr’s Developer Trays catalog famous photographer’s trays using pristine deadpan technique to properly showcase the one consistency among darkroom creators: their developer trays. Both artists demonstrate the range of genres we’ve applied this semester and complement the work of ours we’ve chosen to present to you. We welcome you to look through our viewfinder and experience our interpretation of these concepts. \n  \nSTUDENT WORK BY: \nSARAH ABOUELKER | BRIANA BATTAGLIA | DAWN BAUER | SHANE BUNDRANT| STEVEN EVANS \nRYAN FRIGILLANA | KAITLYN GARCIA | THOMAS GIARRAFFA| KRISTEN HARNER | JESSY HERZOG KAHDEEM JEFFERSON | PAMELA MARTINEZ | XAVIER ANGEL MARTINEZ | JEAN MILLER \nNI OUYANG | ASHLEY PAOLELLA | JULIANO RIZKALLAH | SHANNON SEARSON | NIA JOI SPENCER \nGABRIELLA SPIEGEL | ANDREA ZALKIN \nGUEST ARTISTS: \nELIZABETH BICK | JOHN CYR

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Pink: The History of a Punk\, Pretty\, Powerful Color — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon dress\, pink silk taffeta\, 1857\, USA\, museum purchase.\nSeptember 7\, 2018–January 5\, 2019  \nPink is popularly associated with little girls\, ballerinas\, Barbie dolls\, and all things feminine. Yet the symbolism and significance of pink have varied greatly across time and space. The stereotype of pink-for-girls versus blue-for-boys may be ubiquitous today\, but it only gained traction in the mid-20th century. In the eighteenth century\, when Madame de Pompadour helped make pink fashionable at the French court\, it was perfectly appropriate for a man to wear a pink suit\, just as a woman might wear a pink dress. In cultures such as India\, men never stopped wearing pink. \nYet anyone studying pink comes up against “the color’s inherent ambivalence.” One of “the most divisive of colors\,” pink provokes strong feelings of both “attraction and repulsion.”  “Please sisters\, back away from the pink\,” wrote one journalist\, responding to the pink pussy hats worn at the Women’s March. Some people think pink is pretty\, sweet\, and romantic\, while others associate it with childish frivolity or flamboyant vulgarity. In recent years\, however\, pink increasingly has been interpreted as cool\, androgynous\, and political. “Why would anyone pick blue over pink?” mused the rapper Kanye West. “Pink is obviously a better color.” In the words of i-D magazine\, pink is “punk\, pretty\, and powerful.” \nCurated by Dr. Valerie Steele\, director of The Museum at FIT\, Pink: The History of a Punk\, Pretty\, Powerful Color will explore the changing significance of the color pink over the past three centuries.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: X-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy — Opens
DESCRIPTION:February 6–16\, 2019 \nX-RAYS of Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, and Givenchy is the result of a collaboration between the students of FIT’s Fashion Design MFA program and The Museum at FIT. The project is part of a course titled “Fashion Creation 3—Design Archaeology\,” which centers on the concept that in order to move design forward\, it is of utmost value to know where it has been. \nThe students were divided into four groups\, and then each group was tasked with producing a replica of a couture garment from a leading fashion house: Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, or Givenchy. The original garments\, housed in The Museum at FIT collection\, were carefully researched by the students. In addition to creating the line-for-line replicas\, the students gained a deep understanding of the brand’s heritage. They then developed a contemporary\, technology-driven collection. \nThe display of process-based design work highlights each student’s personal development\, resulting in a fully realized look and an advertorial that completes their vision and projects a new direction for each house. \nThis exhibition is open to the public.  \n  \nThe Museum at FIT hours:\nTuesday–Friday: Noon–8 pm\nSaturday: 10 am–5 pm\nClosed Sundays\, Mondays\, and legal holidays \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Threads of Bondage\, Invisibility\, and Style Influence: Hidden African American Contributions to American Couture (Revisited) — Opens
DESCRIPTION:February 11–March 31 \nIt is estimated that between 1525 and 1866 some 12.5 to 15 million African men\, women\, and children were violently forced from Western and Central Africa into brutal captivity to provide labor for the Western Hemisphere. Approximately 450\,000 of the 10.5 million who survived the overseas voyages were sent to North America to be enslaved. Within this environment developed highly skilled and valued enslaved dressmakers and seamstresses. The exhibition is in tribute to the many unrecognized women who but for their bondage would have been recognized as “designers.” \nItems on view are provided courtesy of the Leonard Davis collection. \nThe exhibition is located on the west side of the fourth floor corridor connecting the Business and Liberal Arts Center and the Dubinsky Student Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art — Opens
DESCRIPTION:February 13–May 15 \nThis exhibition showcases select works by FIT students in the team-taught course “Images of the Mind: Introduction to Chinese Calligraphic Art.” Through guided training\, students gain knowledge of key concepts\, methods\, and techniques of calligraphy and brush pen writing. They also receive a thorough background in the history of the art form and its significance in Chinese. \nBy studying the history of calligraphy and its close connection to poetry\, painting\, and the dissemination of Taoist and Buddhist teachings\, students deepen their understanding of why calligraphy has been considered the highest art form in Chinese culture\, and how calligraphy has developed from a functional communications medium to a deeply expressive art form that combines personal feelings\, situations\, physical conditions\, and the immediate environment. \nCurated by Bing Hu and Chen Zhang; video installation curated by Mario E. Valero.
