SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Italian Way\, Lessons From the Masters for Our Time — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of Megan Brady.\nOctober 20–November 10\, 2018 \nThe Italian Way presents paintings and sketchbooks created by students who were participants in FIT’s month-long study abroad program in Florence\, Italy. The students—sophomores\, juniors\, and seniors—are from the Fine Arts\, Illustration\, Packaging Design\, and Graphic Design departments within the School of Art and Design at FIT. The goal of the study abroad program is to build a bridge between the art of the Italian Renaissance and these young\, contemporary artists. \nStudents were taught to paint with egg tempera\, the medium of choice for many Renaissance artists. Egg tempera was then used to create all of the paintings in this exhibition\, though students were not required to produce a finished painting. Instead\, it was important that they experience firsthand what the artists of the Renaissance did to create their masterpieces. Through the process\, students gained a better understanding and enhanced appreciation of the work and the craftsmanship of artists during 15th-century Italy. \n

SUMMARY:Film and Media Screening Series: 'We the Animals\,' with Jeremiah Zagar
DESCRIPTION:Director Jeremiah Zagar. \nThe Film and Media Screening series will present We the Animals (2018) with director Jeremiah Zagar; he will participate in a Q&A after the film. \nIn We the Animals\, three boys tear through their childhood in the midst of their young parents’ volatile love that makes and unmakes the family many times over. While Manny and Joel grow into versions of their loving and unpredictable father\, Ma seeks to shelter her youngest\, Jonah\, in the cocoon of home. More sensitive and conscious than his older siblings\, Jonah increasingly embraces an imagined world all his own. \nWith a screenplay by Dan Kitrosser and Jeremiah Zagar based on the celebrated Justin Torres novel\, We the Animals is a visceral coming-of-age story propelled by layered performances from its astounding cast—including three talented\, young\, first-time actors—and stunning animated sequences that bring Jonah’s torn inner world to life. Drawing from his documentary background\, director Jeremiah Zagar creates an immersive portrait of working-class family life and brotherhood. \nJeremiah Zagar\nZagar grew up in South Philly spending most afternoons in a dark movie theater or wandering the aisles of his local TLA video store. In 2008 he completed his first documentary\, In a Dream\, which screened theatrically across the U.S. and in film festivals around the world. It was broadcast on HBO\, shortlisted for an Academy Award\, and received two Emmy nominations\, including Best Documentary. \nHis next feature-length documentary\, Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart\, premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO to much fanfare in 2014. His latest film\, the feature-length narrative We The Animals\, premiered at Sundance in 2018 and took home the NEXT Innovator Award. Other notable output includes the pilot episode for Showtime’s 7 Deadly Sins\, and commercial work for GE Capital\, Pedigree and New Balance. When he’s not working\, Zagar spends his time swimming in New York City’s finest public pools. \nThe Film and Media Screening Series is supported by the Diversity Council\, the Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Liberal Arts\, and the departments of Film\, Media and Performing Arts\, English and Communication Studies\, and Modern Languages and Cultures. \nAll screenings are free and open to the public. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Expressions of Civility — Opens
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of FIT’s commitment to creating a civil\, inclusive campus for all\, the annual faculty and staff exhibition will include student work for the first time. \nThe exhibition will explore: What does it mean to be civil in a world that is increasingly not? In an era where personal attacks and inflammatory positions have superseded dialogue and debate\, how do we seek to understand that which separates us and builds connections that increase empathy\, inclusivity\, knowledge and community strength? Civility—and the ability to reconcile our differences for the greater good—is at the very root of a democratic society. It spurs forward movement\, it moves us past our points of conflict\, it is what fuels progress. Ultimately\, it’s the only thing that ever has. \nArtwork will be on view in the following locations: \nLynn and Carl Goldstein Gallery\, Feldman Center\, Ninth Floor (faculty/staff work): November 14\, 2018–October 2019 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth and Sixth floors (student work): November 19\, 2018–March 31\, 2019 \nGallery FIT\, The Museum at FIT (students/faculty/staff): November 19\, 2018–January 26\, 2019

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fashion Unraveled — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Detail of ensemble by XULY.Bët\, repurposed acrylic sweaters\, fall 1994\, gift of XULY.Bët.\nMay 25–November 17\, 2018  \nFashion Unraveled will examine the concepts of imperfection and incompletion in fashion. Garments that are altered\, unfinished\, or deconstructed\, in addition to clothing that shows signs of wear\, will highlight the aberrant beauty in flawed objects. Unless such imperfections are intentional—as they are in the case of deconstructed fashion—these garments are often overlooked in museum collections. This exhibition will include a selection of objects from the museum’s permanent collection\, highlighting objects that are not only visually compelling\, but that may also tell intriguing stories about their makers and/or wearers. \nIt is only in recent years that imperfect or inauthentic objects have been given greater consideration\, as interest in their “biographies” has grown. Signs of repeated wear\, shortened hemlines\, and careful mends can be found even on haute couture garments\, and they highlight the lasting economic and emotional worth of many clothes within museum collections. These findings—which are often unseen and unknown by museum visitors—challenge the concept of fashion as a strictly ephemeral\, disposable commodity. Fashion Unraveled will also reveal how the appearance of aged clothing\, with its flaws and signs of decay\, has been embraced by many designers as an aesthetic choice\, furthering the reconstruction of notions about beauty and value in fashion.

SUMMARY:Modernism à la Mode: A Presentation on Fashion and Literature
DESCRIPTION:Author Elizabeth Sheehan\nThe Department of English and Communications Studies and the School of Liberal Arts present a panel discussion about fashion and literature with special guest Elizabeth Sheehan\, author and professor at Oregon State University. \n4–5 pm: Guest speaker: Elizabeth Sheehan’s Presentation and Discussion \n5–6 pm: Panel discussion and Q & A with three FIT scholars: \n\nSarah Byrd\, School of Graduate Studies\, FIT\nJustine De Young\, History of Art Department\, FIT\nElizabeth Sheehan\, English and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University\nJeri Zulli\, Assistant Professor\, English and Communication Studies\, FIT\n\nEveryone is welcome to join for one or both hours.\n\nDr. Elizabeth Sheehan\, an assistant professor of English and Women\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University\, is the author of Modernism a la Mode: Fashion and the Ends of Literature (Cornell University Press\, 2018)\, and co-editor of Cultures of Femininity in Modern Fashion. She has produced groundbreaking publications on modernism\, fashion\, feminist theory\, race\, affect\, photography\, and magazines. \nModernism à la Mode argues that fashion describes why and how literary modernism matters in its own historical moment and ours. Bringing together texts\, textiles\, and theories of dress\, Elizabeth Sheehan shows that writers\, including Virginia Woolf\, D.H. Lawrence\, W.E.B. Du Bois\, Nella Larsen\, and F. Scott Fitzgerald\, turned to fashion to understand what their own stylized works could do in the context of global capital\, systemic violence\, and social transformation. Modernists engage with fashion as a mood\, a set of material objects\, and a target of critique\, and\, in doing so\, anticipate and address contemporary debates centered on the uses of literature and literary criticism amidst the supposed crisis in the humanities. A modernist affect with a purpose\, no less. By engaging modernism à la mode—that is\, contingently\, contextually\, and in light of contemporary concerns—this book offers an alternative to the often-untenable distinctions between strong or weak\, suspicious or reparative\, and politically activist or quietist approaches to literature\, which frame current debates about literary methodology. As fashion helps us to describe what modernist texts do\, it enables us to do more with modernism as a form of inquiry\, perception\, and critique. Fashion and modernism are interwoven forms of inquiry\, perception\, and critique\, writes Sheehan. It is fashion that puts the work of early twentieth-century writers in conversation with 21st-century theories of emotion\, materiality\, animality\, beauty\, and history. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fabric In Fashion — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Traina-Norell\, “Indian sari” silk brocade dress\, circa 1955\, gift of Mildred Morton.\nDecember 4\, 2018–May 4\, 2019  \nFabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years. The examination of textiles is often separated from that of the fashionable silhouette\, yet historically\, textiles were as important as the cut of clothing in keeping up with current fashion. This exhibition will delve into the mechanics of textiles\, looking at how fibers and weaves build the materiality of fashion. It will also explore the cultural influence of fabric. The Western world’s demand for fashionable textiles of silk\, cotton\, wool\, and synthetics has had enormous repercussions across the globe. \nFabric In Fashion will highlight both clothing and flat textiles from the museum’s permanent collection\, examining how the physical properties of specific fabrics determine the way a piece of clothing interacts with the body\, as well as how the design and cultural associations of textiles reveal the social motivations that drive fashion forward. The exhibition is organized by Elizabeth Way\, assistant curator of costume.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: View Finder
DESCRIPTION:December 7–14 \nThe name View Finder is derived from the tool used on a camera for framing the composition of an image. As photographers\, there’s no one right way to take a photo and what to take it with; however\, the one consistency is our viewfinders. Regardless of whether it’s a full frame digital SLR\, a medium-format film camera\, or simply an iPhone\, this is how we all see our independent worlds and how we choose to capture them. \nView Finder features work by the junior class in the Photography BFA program at FIT. As part of the Photographic Concepts and Exhibition course\, this show is an opportunity to exhibit the work created this semester without boundaries on presentation. It highlights the topics the class has covered\, such as tableau\, intimate narrative\, and deadpan. In addition to this\, students have also considered different ways in which to manifest our creations for the public from large-scale printing to handheld installation. As artists\, they were challenged with producing content that not only fulfills the requirements for the curriculum\, but also articulates our each student’s style and expression. \nFor this exhibition\, two outside creators were also invited to participate: course professor Elizabeth Bick and notable photographer John Cyr. \nProfessor Bick’s work is relevant to the show because of her tableau aesthetic. Her pieces are in collaboration with an artist that makes work out of old hotel bed sheets. She’s capturing the movement of the sheets and artist in a stop motion format. \nCyr’s Developer Trays catalog famous photographer’s trays using pristine deadpan technique to properly showcase the one consistency among darkroom creators: their developer trays. Both artists demonstrate the range of genres we’ve applied this semester and complement the work of ours we’ve chosen to present to you. We welcome you to look through our viewfinder and experience our interpretation of these concepts. \n  \nSTUDENT WORK BY: \nSARAH ABOUELKER | BRIANA BATTAGLIA | DAWN BAUER | SHANE BUNDRANT| STEVEN EVANS \nRYAN FRIGILLANA | KAITLYN GARCIA | THOMAS GIARRAFFA| KRISTEN HARNER | JESSY HERZOG KAHDEEM JEFFERSON | PAMELA MARTINEZ | XAVIER ANGEL MARTINEZ | JEAN MILLER \nNI OUYANG | ASHLEY PAOLELLA | JULIANO RIZKALLAH | SHANNON SEARSON | NIA JOI SPENCER \nGABRIELLA SPIEGEL | ANDREA ZALKIN \nGUEST ARTISTS: \nELIZABETH BICK | JOHN CYR
