SUMMARY:Interior Design 2017 Senior Thesis Exhibition: Place Making…Space Becomes Place — Closes
DESCRIPTION:October 9–20  \nThe Interior Design Department presents the thesis projects from the program completed during the spring of 2017. The task of the 2017 Thesis Studio class members was to create experiences of place. These places had to be representative of the current and future lifestyles of individuals. Just as technology has altered human existence\, interior design has a responsibility to respond to a world that is ever evolving. Design must recognize current and developing ideas of how the places for today are rooted in our way of living. \n So a focus on “place making” was emphasized rather than just “space making.” As appropriate to an Interior Design baccalaureate degree\, each thesis deals with physical space\, the perception of space\, and the meaning of space in relationship to human behavioral issues and how these combine to become a “place.”

SUMMARY:Student Open Mic: What Is Feminism Now? Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:This student-focused event will bring together students from across campus to respond to the question\, What is feminism now? This event will create new space for the sharing of ideas and mutual respect on campus about the historic roots of feminism and what relevance this has today for our student body as active members of their communities and creative thinkers. \nStudents will have the opportunity to share their own answers to the question in an open-mic co-hosted by student group Half the Sky. This project will allow students\, faculty\, and staff to engage in dialogue concerning the overlap of art and activism in relation to the complicated historical roots of the term feminism and the various ways it is currently employed in the public sphere. \nA reception will follow directly after the event. \nFor more information\, visit the What Is Feminism Now? site here. \n

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Vanessa Grigoriadis
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Max Farago. \nNational Magazine Award winner Vanessa Grigoriadis will be at Barnes & Noble at FIT to present and sign copies of her new book\, Blurred Lines: Rethinking Sex\, Power\, and Consent on Campus. \nThe book’s description via Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: \nA new sexual revolution is sweeping the country\, and college students are on the front lines. Women use fresh\, smart methods to fight entrenched sexism and sexual assault even as they celebrate their own sexuality as never before. Many “woke” male students are more sensitive to women’s concerns than previous generations ever were\, while other men perpetuate the most cruel misogyny. Amid such apparent contradictions\, it’s no surprise that intense confusion shrouds the topic of sex on campus. \nVanessa Grigoriadis dispels that confusion as no other writer could by traveling to schools large and small\, embedding in their social whirl\, and talking candidly with dozens of students – among them\, both accusers and accused– as well as administrators\, parents\, and researchers. Her unprecedented investigation presents a host of new truths. She reveals which times and settings are most dangerous for women (for instance\, beware the “red zone”); she demystifies the welter of conflicting statistics about the prevalence of campus rape; she makes a strong case that not all “sexual assault” is equivalent; and she offers convincing if controversial advice on how schools\, students\, and parents can make college a safer\, richer experience. The sum of her fascinating\, fly-on-the-wall reportage is a revelatory account of how long-standing rules of sex and power are being rewritten from scratch. \n

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: What Is Feminism Now? Art and Activism
DESCRIPTION:This panel will bring together a diverse team of community activists and artists to address the vitality of work on behalf of women’s\, trans\, and queer empowerment through responses to the question\, What is Feminism Now? The event will create new space for the sharing of ideas and mutual respect on campus about the historic roots of feminism and what relevance this has today for our student body as active members of their communities and creative thinkers. \nThe event will feature a panel of activists and artists who will share their current work addressing the modern place of feminism in art and activism. A Q&A will follow the discussion. The program is set up to be inclusive; our panelists and authors work with diverse cultures\, races\, ethnicities\, gender identities and socioeconomic classes. Our collaborators bring many years of experience in their fields to the conversation. Their experiences—in community organizing\, craftivism\, drag performance\, writing with their communities and feminist artistic and political traditions—will bring a diverse range of voices to start a dialogue about this timely question. Panelists will include Betsy Greer\, Sarah Corbett\, Buzz Slutsky\, Gale Zucker and Rose Gorman. (See their bios here.)  \nThis project will introduce students to a broad range of voices and experiences that they might not otherwise have access to\, creating a much needed space on campus for dialogue among students\, faculty\, and staff. \nA reception will follow directly after the event. Click here for more information about What Is Feminism Now?

SUMMARY:Talking Trade at FIT: The Active Pursuit of Shared Value Through International Corporate Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:In this panel discussion\, professionals will discuss today’s climate of corporate responsibility. Now more than ever\, employees\, investors\, and customers expect brands to take social and environmental action. However\, corporations often rely on diffuse\, uncoordinated programming rather than a unified corporate social responsibility platform.
