SUMMARY:Queer Culture Lecture and Performance Series: Expanded Visions: 50 Years of Collecting
DESCRIPTION:The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art will hold a talk about its inaugural exhibition in its newly renovated and vastly expanded museum space titled Expanded Visions: Fifty Years of Collecting. The show\, which opened March 10 with over 250 works on view\, mines the rich cultural coffers of the museum’s collection to trace the evolution of the institution\, amid decades of shifting social conditions. The exhibition presents a survey of the collection initiated by the museum co-founders\, Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman\, who have spent more than 50 years amassing artworks that speak directly to the LGBTQ experience. Their early efforts yielded one of the most unique archives of work that would have otherwise been lost or destroyed\, which comprises the core of the museum’s collection that now houses more than 30\,000 objects. \nCurator Branden Wallace will discuss highlights of the exhibition as part of the ongoing Queer Culture Lecture and Performance Series at FIT. The series is made possible by an FIT President’s Diversity Grant. \nThe event is free and open to the public.  \n

SUMMARY:FIT Biodesign Challenge Presentations
DESCRIPTION:The internal FIT Biodesign Challenge final will be held this Monday\, May 1\, at 5:30 pm\, in the Feldman Center’s Robert Lagary Board Room; posters and exhibits from the four teams will be on display across the hall in the Roberts Room.\n\nThe Biodesign Challenge offers teams of art and design students the opportunity to envision future applications of biotechnology in a competition that highlights student work. The winning teams and their professors will be invited to New York City in June 2017 for the Biodesign Summit\, where they will present in front of a wide audience from the art\, design\, industrial\, and academic communities. Their work will then go on display at venues across the country.\n\n\nJudging will happen in two rounds. On May 1 at FIT\, the faculty advisors\, in conjunction with the our guest expert consultants who have worked with the FIT teams throughout the semester\, will assess the students’ projects and pick one team to go to the Biodesign Summit in June at the MoMA. At the Biodesign Summit\, a jury of experts will assess the attending teams’ projects and presentations and select the overall winners.\n\n\nThe four competing FIT teams are as follows:\n\n\nJellyfish Cuir. The team is experimenting with enzymatic extraction of collagen from overpopulations of jellyfish for use as an alternative biomaterial\, such as nonmammalian leather or biodegradable fishing line.\n#GrowaPair. This group is exploring the emerging world of living materials and exploiting decomposers\, microbial fermentation\, agricultural byproducts as fibers and a natural pigment source\, while addressing material challenges (waterproofness\, strength\, etc.) to “grow” a pair of shoes.\nThe Bioessence Bodysuit. The team is exploring wearable delivery systems of essential oil and medicinal plants to relieve symptoms of serious diseases\, such as cancer. Modeling the delivery system around the human lymphatic system\, the team aims to create a wearable bodysuit that can alleviate physical and emotional symptoms associated with cancer in a targeted way.\nSanit-Airy. This student is working on the methane air filter textile/ collection system to capture methane from existing processing (such as landfill collection \,cow feeds\, tanks or lagoons). The system would trap escaping methane with the assistance of fans to corral the gas toward the textile\, and exploring materials that can adsorb and controllably desorb methane for use as a fuel\, where the capture material itself is also a potential clean energy source.\n\nOur volunteer expert judges are:\n\n\n\nJames Lendemer\, assistant curator\, Institute of Systematic Botany\, expert in lichens and lichenicolous fungi\nJulie Wolf\, American Society for Microbiology\, researcher and science educator\nJulia Borden\, cell engineering researcher at Modern Meadows\nSebastian Cocioba\, owner and lead scientist at New York Botanics\, LLC\, a plant biotech R&D laboratory with a specialization in genetic engineering of novel ornamental crop species\, science educator\nNica Rabinowitz\, sustainable fashion designer\, textile artist and educator\, founder of Fiberhouse Collectives

SUMMARY:Fashion and Textile Studies Symposium: Dressing New York: Identity and Experience
DESCRIPTION:A commercial and cultural capital\, New York is the center of the American fashion industry\, home of fashion innovators in design\, production\, and retail. Creators of both luxurious custom clothing and ready-to-wear sportswear have found a place in New York\, as have the retailers who marketed and sold these items and the journalists who authored the fashion news for the American public. Yet the New York dress experience goes beyond the industry\, encompassing a diversity of expressions of individuals and subcultures\, all drawn to the energy of this place of extremes. \nIn this symposium\, students in FIT’s MA program in Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice will present papers on a range of topics\, investigating New York dress in the 19th and 20th centuries. From issues of gender and dress reform to design milestones and triumphs of the mainstream fashion system\, New Yorkers reimagine and reinvent themselves through dress. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
