Photo by Lisa K. Blatt. \nTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. \nARTSpeak 2016-2017 is an interdisciplinary program presented by the departments of Fine Arts and History of Art that consists of lectures and a panel discussion on the theme of The Presence of Art History in the Mind of the Artist. The theme explores the impact of art history on the contemporary artist’s studio practice. \nOn April 6\, ARTSpeak presents filmmaker and artist Lynn Hershman Leeson lecturing on her work\, which has received international acclaim over the last five decades. Her innovative investigates issues that are now recognized as key to the workings of society: the relationship between humans and technology\, identity\, surveillance\, and the use of media as a tool of empowerment against censorship and political repression. Leeson is considered among the most influential contemporary media artists and has made pioneering contributions in photography\, video\, film\, performance\, installation\, and interactive as well as net-based media art. \nHer activist films on injustice within the art world and society at large have been praised worldwide. Women Art Revolution! won first prize in the Montreal Festival for Films on Art and hailed by the Museum of Modern Art as one of the three best documentaries of 2012. Holland Cotter of The New York Times called it “the most comprehensive documentary ever made on the feminist art movement.” Her 2007 film Strange Culture\, a documentary that examined the case of an artist suspected of bioterrorism\, was deemed “the perfect balance of form and content” by the Times and called “a brilliant and moving examination of fear and its manipulation” by The Nation. \nThe ARTSpeak event is made possible in part through funding by the FIT Student-Faculty Corporation\, the School of Art and Design\, and the School of Liberal Arts. \nLeeson’s film Teknolust is also being screened as part of the Film and Media Screening Series on Tuesday\, April 4\, at 6:30 pm. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Paris Refashioned\, 1957–1968 — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Couture Future (ready-to-wear label by André Courrèges)\, pantsuit\, 1968\, wool blend\, France\, gift of Mrs. Phillip Schwartz.\nParis Refashioned\, 1957-1968 examines the significant role that Paris played during one of the most fascinating and groundbreaking periods in fashion history. In 1957\, 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent was made creative director of the esteemed couture house of Christian Dior. His first solo collection for Dior included his A-line “trapeze” dresses\, ushering in an unmistakable shift toward more relaxed and ultimately more youthful designs—and with it\, dramatic changes to the couture fashion industry. \nBy 1963\, a group of young French ready-to-wear designers known as the stylistes had begun to make an impact on fashion both in their home country and abroad. Their of-the-minute fashions\, which were favored by style arbiters such as Brigitte Bardot\, presented an unexpected challenge to the more staid\, costly\, and labor-intensive creations of the couturiers. By 1968\, some of the best-known couturiers—including Saint Laurent\, Pierre Cardin\, and André Courrèges—were presenting ready-to-wear lines in addition to their couture creations. Paris Refashioned will examine the shift from the unassailable dominance of the haute couture to the newfound influence of ready-to-wear.

SUMMARY:Queer Culture Lecture and Performance Series: Expanded Visions: 50 Years of Collecting
DESCRIPTION:The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art will hold a talk about its inaugural exhibition in its newly renovated and vastly expanded museum space titled Expanded Visions: Fifty Years of Collecting. The show\, which opened March 10 with over 250 works on view\, mines the rich cultural coffers of the museum’s collection to trace the evolution of the institution\, amid decades of shifting social conditions. The exhibition presents a survey of the collection initiated by the museum co-founders\, Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman\, who have spent more than 50 years amassing artworks that speak directly to the LGBTQ experience. Their early efforts yielded one of the most unique archives of work that would have otherwise been lost or destroyed\, which comprises the core of the museum’s collection that now houses more than 30\,000 objects. \nCurator Branden Wallace will discuss highlights of the exhibition as part of the ongoing Queer Culture Lecture and Performance Series at FIT. The series is made possible by an FIT President’s Diversity Grant. \nThe event is free and open to the public.  \n
