SUMMARY:Exhibition: Michael Katz: Art as Fashion — Closes
DESCRIPTION:October 11–November 15\, 2019 \nThe Art and Design Gallery presents the work of the late fashion designer Michael Katz\, whose exuberant hand-painted creations are part of the collection of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and have been worn by luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey and Mick Jagger. \nKatz was a friend of FIT’s Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design program for over 20 years. He spoke to classes\, juried windows\, and donated original work to the program’s wardrobe collection\, allowing students to use current luxury brand fashion for their displays and portfolios. Each of Katz’s garments was one of a kind\, using hand-painted silk and silk-screened fabrics he used to create his collections. Katz also designed original patterns\, which he also donated to the college. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Minimalism/Maximalism — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Ruiz de la Prada\, dress\, spring/summer 2014\, Madrid\, gift of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada.\nMay 28–November 16\, 2019  \n\nFashion is a world of extremes\, where sartorial expression ranges from minimalist to maximalist aesthetics. Some designers may identify almost exclusively with one over the other; Calvin Klein\, for instance\, was known for fashion minimalism. However\, the cyclical nature of fashion moves us through design periods alternately dominated by a minimalist or maximalist aesthetic\, reaffirming Isaac Newton’s third law of motion: for every action\, there is an equal and opposite reaction.\n\nIn fashion\, minimalism and maximalism define two extremes along the design spectrum. Minimalism\, the aesthetic of less-is-more\, is based on a reductive approach to design\, and celebrates purity and restraint. Maximalism\, on the other hand\, accentuates the beauty of excess and redundancy. While these may be considered aesthetic opposites\, both seek to challenge perception\, and as forms of expression\, they serve as indicators of the sociocultural and economic zeitgeist of the given time period. \nMinimalism/Maximalism explores the interplay between minimalist and maximalist aesthetics as they have been and continue to be expressed through fashion. Beginning in the 18th century\, the exhibition examines how these aesthetic viewpoints are expressed over time and move fashion forward. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
