SUMMARY:FIT Diversity Comic Con 2020
DESCRIPTION:As part of its Civility Week\, FIT hosts the Diversity Comic Con for a third year\, and this year will be completely online\, which means anyone can attend from anywhere in the world. \nThe comic con features panel discussions\, speed networking\, drawing contest\, cosplay challenge\, a comic anthology an a virtual marketplace/exhibition. \nGuests this year include Shawn Martinbrough\, Alitha Martinez\, Christian Cooper\, Kiku Hughes\, Mika Song\, Amy Chu\, Gina Gagliano\, Andrea Colvin\, John Siuntres\, Andy Schmidt\, Fabrice Saplosky and many more. We are also joined by Scholastic Graphix\, First Second\, Ahoy Comics\, Magnetic Press\, Fairsquare Comics\, Random House Graphic and DC Comics. \nView the full list of speakers on the Diversity Comic Con website. \nWhile the medium of comic books has been around for almost a century\, the presence of minorities—as both subjects and creators—has been sorely lacking. But times are changing\, and the participation and visibility of multicultural art and stories are more crucial than ever. \nMore and more\, the lines between print and screen media are blurring and merging as stories that were once the domain of comic books become the movies and television shows of today. Comic books are the beginning of visual storytelling. \nDiversity Comic Con gives students an opportunity to be exposed to careers that are truly multidisciplinary while providing a venue to showcase their work to publishers\, professionals\, and the general public. This event gives them an invaluable experience and will widen their horizons. \nThis event is fully sponsored by a grant from the President’s Diversity Council. \nThis event is free and open to the public; REGISTER HERE TO RECEIVE LINKS TO ALL VIRTUAL EVENTS.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk Series: Abigail DeVille and Christopher K. Ho in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, November 12 at 2 pm for a conversation between FIT alum Abigail DeVille and current FIT artist fellow Christopher K. Ho presented jointly by Hyde Park Art Center and Fashion Institute of Technology. \nAs FIT’s art fellow Christopher K. Ho uses FIT as “site\,” or as a place for inspiration to create work and collaborate with students\, currently working remotely from Colorado. Ho is a maker\, writer\, and organizer and is known for materially exquisite objects that draw from material about and lived encounters with power and otherness in an unevenly decolonized increasingly networked world. His worked has been exhibited internationally and has been written about in Hyperallergic\, Art in America and Art Asia Pacific. \nMaintaining a long-standing interest in marginalized people and places\, Abigail DeVille\, Fine Arts ’09\, creates site-specific immersive installations designed to bring attention to these forgotten stories\, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem\, and a new sculpture in Madison Square Park. \n\nDeVille often works with objects and materials sourced from the area surrounding the exhibition site\, and her theatrical aesthetic embodies the phrase\, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.” Though collected objects are essential to her installations\, DeVille’s priority is the stories her installations can tell. DeVille’s family roots in New York go back at least two generations; her interest in New York City\, and her work about it\, is both personal and political. \n\nThe Hyde Park Art Center is a hub for contemporary arts in Chicago\, serving as a gathering and production space for artists and the broader community to cultivate ideas\, impact social change\, and connect with new networks. \n\nClick this Google Meet link at the time of the event.  (Please mute your mic when you arrive.) \n\nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; add this event to your calendar using the Google Calendar/iCal buttons below to set reminders for the day of the event.
