SUMMARY:The Barneys Oral Histories: A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for Feb. 23. This is the rescheduled date.  \n \nDeveloped in response to a perceived sense of loss surrounding the closing of Barneys New York\, a beloved institution. The Barneys Oral Histories were created to preserve memory and meaning. These interviews give voice to the people who worked there\, buyers\, creative directors\, advertising executives\, and visual merchandizers\, whose labor shaped Barneys’ singular identity. \nThe Barneys Oral Histories Symposium examines shopping in New York from the 1980s till its closure and the production of New York culture through the department store catalogs. It also explores the Fashion Calendar and how parties\, press and publicity at Barneys helped construct a cultural ecosystem that extended far beyond the retail spaces. \nSpeakers at the event will include FIT and NYU faculty members and former Barneys employees. \nThis event is sponsored by FIT’s Special Collections and College Archive\, Gladys Marcus Library\, the Art History and Museum Professions program\, the Art History and Museum Professions Association\, and the Fashion History Club. \nThis is the rescheduled date after the original event was canceled due to weather.  \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \n RSVP FOR THE SYMPOSIUM

DESCRIPTION:Coleen Scott and Larry McQueen\, authors of The Costumes of Hollywood\, will be in virtual conversation with FIT Special Collections Associate James Ferguson\, with Q&A to follow. \nThe Costumes of Hollywood details the design\, creation\, and influence of over 100 ensembles from some of the most iconic designers\, films\, and roles in Hollywood history\, spanning the 1920s through the early 21st century. \nAll costumes featured are from the Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design\, one of the world’s largest private collections\, curated over 35 years by leading Hollywood costume historian and archivist\, Larry McQueen. The book presents full costumes on display in addition to close-ups\, and rarely seen interior details of some garments. Iconic costumes\, including many with Academy Award nominations\, from Some Like It Hot\, Hello Dolly\, Cabaret\, Rear Window\, Ben Hur\, Mildred Pierce\, Angel\, Masters of the Universe\, The Piano\, The Hunger Games\, and so many others are featured. \nThis book gives the audience a rare and heretofore unpublished insight into what collecting\, restoring\, and reproducing entails\, and highlights differences between private collecting and museum-backed collections. The Costumes of Hollywood details the significance of the designer\, costume\, and wearer via thorough research\, interviews\, and Larry McQueen’s behind-the-scenes knowledge of collecting and working as an archivist in Hollywood. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.  \n JOIN THE VIRTUAL EVENT

Photo courtesy of designer.\nFebruary 25–March 22\, 2026\nGoodman Center Lobby \nBeyond Utility\, curated by graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, examines the perpetual transformation of utilitarian design within and beyond the fashion system. Throughout history\, fashion and anti-fashion groups have adopted and abstracted clothing born out of necessity\, continuously negotiating between form and function. Showcasing never-before-displayed objects from the MFIT Study Collection and the FTS Graduate Study Collection\, the exhibition pairs utility dress archetypes with their later reinterpretations\, featuring designs from Issey Miyake\, BOY London\, Bonnie Cashin\, Junya Watanabe\, Burberry\, Moschino\, and more. \nThe case studies span three sections\, unbound by chronology: “Workwear: Beyond Labor\,” “Military: Beyond Combat\,” and “Craft: Beyond Domesticity\,” exploring the interplay between materials\, aesthetics\, and cultural connotations. By investigating objects that have unique biographies and lived-experiences\, Beyond Utility reveals how utility dress can shape ideas of style\, from factories and battlefields to runways and city streets. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

O’Neal. \nIn his 40-plus-year career\, Professor Lamont O’Neal has been published in nearly every aspect of the fashion world\, including the magazines Cosmopolitan\, New York\, GQ\, Playboy\, and Essence. Professor O’Neal’s list of fashion designer clients includes Oscar de la Renta\, David Chu Nautica\, American Eagle\, and Polo Ralph Lauren. He also frequently contributed covers for Vogue Butterick. His credits include portraiture\, children’s books and illustrations. Published works include Illustrated Men: Drawing and Rendering the Male Fashion Figure\, and André: André Leon Talley–A Fabulously Fashionable Fairy Tale. \nBil Donovan is America’s leading contemporary fashion illustrator with an international following. DESCRIPTION:March 27–April 19\, 2026\nGoodman Center Lobby \nCross-Pollination: Fashion and Psychoanalysis is The Museum at FIT’s ninth collaborative workshop that brings together students and faculty from higher education institutions around the globe. For this year’s project\, students from the Fashion Institute of Technology (United States)\, Universidad de Monterrey (Mexico)\, and LaSalle College of the Arts (Singapore) used MFIT’s 2025 exhibition Dress\, Dreams\, and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis as a springboard to research\, design\, and create garments\, accessories\, animations\, publications\, and more. Faculty members from the three schools connected their curricula to themes from the exhibition such as: The Mirror Stage\, The Fragmented Body\, and The Gaze. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
