SUMMARY:FIT Authors Talk: Professor Ron Amato
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on September 18\, 5-6 pm\, for our first FIT Authors Talk of the semester with Photography Professor Ron Amato. He will present his newest book\, Artists of Provincetown. \nArtists of Provincetown\, by fine art photographer Ron Amato\, seeks to not only celebrate\, but preserve the legacy of one of the nation’s oldest art colonies\, now facing an uncertain future due to rising property values\, corporate invasion\, and what\, in the book’s introduction\, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Michael Cunningham calls\, “catastrophic expense.” \nMade over a period of eight years\, Artists of Provincetown contains 84 quietly immersive portraits that illustrate the breadth and depth of this 125-year-old community of painters\, writers\, photographers and sculptors. \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public.  \n REGISTER

SUMMARY:World Affairs Lecture Series: From the Individual to the Collective: A Search for Identity\, with Rania Matar
DESCRIPTION:Rania Matar. Photo by Helena Goessens. Aya (the Eye)\, Gemmayze\, Beirut\, Lebanon. 2022. Photo by Rania Matar. Juliette (Mirror)\, Achrafieh\, Beirut\, Lebanon. 2024. Photo by Rania Matar. \nIn this virtual World Affairs Lecture\, Rania Matar will be in conversation with Dr. Souzeina Mushtaq\, assistant professor of Communication and Media Studies at University of Wisconsin–River Falls\, on the topic of “From the Individual to the Collective: A Search for Identity.” \nRania Matar has dedicated her photographic practice to exploring deeply personal narratives\, drawing upon her multifaceted cultural background and cross-cultural experiences as a Lebanese-born Palestinian-American artist and mother. Her work explores issues of individual and collective identity\, often through photographs of girls and women in the United States and the Middle East. Working in collaboration with her subjects to create intimate\, often emotionally charged portraits\, her work highlights transcendent human experiences and emphasizes underlying similarities rather than apparent differences.  In doing so\, her work provides insight into the complexity of women’s inner lives and relationships. An accomplished artist\, Matar was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018. \nThe Department of Social Sciences’ World Affairs Lecture Series fulfills FIT’s mission to foster an understanding of diverse cultures and politics within the international as well as domestic perspectives. It also embraces\, supports\, and expands upon the president’s campuswide initiative on civility. \nJoin using this webinar link: \nhttps://fitnyc.webex.com/fitnyc/j.php?MTID=ma7c936c4a07a312ddb11dd6d110e3862 \nWebinar number: 2631 488 9150\nWebinar password: fitnyc (348692 when dialing from a phone or video system) \nOr join by phone: \n+1-646-992-2010 United States Toll (New York City)\nAccess code: 263 148 89150 \nThis virtual event is free and open to the public; join using the Webex link and use the password fitnyc.
