SUMMARY:Exhibition: Africa's Fashion Diaspora — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Sindiso Khumalo\, printed cotton dress detail\, Spring 2021\, South Africa. The Museum at FIT\, museum purchase\, 2023.32.1\nSeptember 18–December 29\, 2024\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\, The Museum at FIT\n \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora examines fashion as a medium of storytelling and as a vital way for designers to contribute to longstanding and evolving ideas of transnational Black cultural spaces. Whether described as Négritude\, Pan-Africanism\, the Black Atlantic\, Black consciousness\, or Afrofuturism\, Black thinkers and creatives\, from philosophers to writers\, musicians\, and visual artists\, have theorized cultural connections between diverse communities of African descent. This exhibition explores designers from Africa\, the Americas\, and Europe who interpret and construct the culture of their distinct localities and communities for an international audience and/or reach across geographies to tie Black cultural practices together through their designs. \nExamples include South African designer Sindiso Khumalo’s textile print inspired by American abolitionist Harriet Tubman\, British designer Grace Wales Bonner’s tuxedo informed by the court of Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia\, and French designer Olivier Rousteing’s collection for Balmain based on Black American cowboys. Through approximately 60 ensembles\, textiles\, and accessories\, Africa’s Fashion Diaspora illustrates how fashion designers have contributed to international dialogues to chronicle\, evaluate\, and expand modern ideas of Blackness. \nAfrica’s Fashion Diaspora is curated by MFIT associate curator Elizabeth Way. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Social Responsibilities of Museums — Opens
DESCRIPTION:January 21–April 20\, 2025 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fourth Floor Exhibition Case \nStudents in FIT’s Art History and Museum Professions program reflected on the social responsibilities of museums in recognition of Black History Month. The Art History and Museum Professions major prepares students for positions in museums and other art institutions\, with a focus on collections management\, development\, education\, public relations\, rights and reproductions\, visitor services\, special events\, and exhibitions. By showcasing books related to five temporary exhibitions hosted by five different New York City museums\, this exhibition\, held at the Gladys Marcus Library’s fourth-floor exhibit case\, hopes to highlight the work being done to uplift marginalized communities. \nShows like the Whitney’s Edges of Ailey and The Met’s Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt 1876–Now provide a look into the world of Black artists and how they have shaped so much of American art and music\, yet their names often remain unspoken. History is littered with forgotten voices\, but large cultural centers can forever change the way something is remembered. Museums hold power\, and with that power comes an obligation to the communities that support them. The types of artwork and artists that museums choose for exhibitions reveal what is valued in society. By highlighting Black and Latin American artists\, New York museums prove that they understand the responsibility they hold\, as they seek to include those who have been on the sidelines for far too long. \nAn opening reception will be held Monday\, February 24\, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. \nCurator: Lisa Yen\nFaculty Advisor: Professor Kyunghee Pyun\, Assistant Chair\, Art History and Museum Professions\nGraphic Designer: Lisa Yen\nContributors: Thursday Abad\, Samantha Barnes\, Ashley Villegas Hernandez\, JaDea Houston\, Cassandra (Cassie) Hughes (students in the Art History and Museum Professions program) \nThis event is part of the FIT Diversity Collective’s Black History Month activities; for a full schedule of activities\, visit fitnyc.edu/blackhistory. \nThis exhibition is for the FIT community only.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Resistance and Resilience: The Weavers of Oaxaca — Opens
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2025–January 5\, 2026\nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth Floor Gallery \n“Weaving is not just an economic activity; it is a means through which Zapotec women express their cultural identity and maintain a connection to their ancestral heritage.” —from Lynn Stephen’s book\, Zapotec Women \nAs you step into this exhibition\, imagine walking through the vibrant villages of Oaxaca. Every home is filled with the clack of looms and the scent of natural dyes simmering over open fires. In these spaces\, weaving is far more than craft; it is a way of life. Here\, threads connect past and present\, and each textile tells a story of resilience. For generations\, the artisans of Oaxaca have woven their world into intricate patterns that speak of nature\, ancestors\, and community bonds. Their craft represents an unbroken line of knowledge passed down through centuries\, each knot and dye preserving both their heritage and identity. \nToday\, this work faces new challenges. The same global markets that bring opportunity also demand compromise\, pressuring artisans to adapt their traditional designs and methods to appeal to modern tastes and industrial efficiency. What was once woven for local use now finds itself at the crossroads of preservation and commodification\, as artisans delicately balance their heritage with the demands of survival. Yet\, these weavers resist\, transforming their art into a quiet rebellion that continuously preserves cultural identity while navigating a rapidly changing world. \nThis exhibition explores the diversity of Oaxaca’s weaving traditions\, encompassing techniques and designs from different regions of the state. The natural dyes featured in these textiles\, drawn from plants\, insects\, and minerals\, embody a deep relationship with the land and its ecosystems. However\, these dyes are not inherently sustainable. Their reliance on nature’s cycles\, and the ecosystems that support them\, places them at risk—dependent on human practices that must prioritize balance\, preservation\, and systemic care. The relationship between artisans and the natural world is one of both beauty and fragility\, reminding us that such resources require thoughtful stewardship. \nThrough these curated images\, textiles\, and garments\, you’ll witness how weaving has become a tool for empowerment and collective action. Beyond its economic role\, weaving fosters community resilience and solidarity\, offering a platform for addressing broader social and environmental challenges. Each piece reflects the intricate patterns of adaptation\, creativity\, and pride that define Oaxaca’s artisans and their enduring traditions. \nThis exhibition invites you to honor these weavers as cultural keepers and storytellers\, preserving their heritage one thread at a time. It is a call to recognize the resilience of their practices and the shared responsibility to support their continued legacy\, ensuring their artistry and stories enrich generations to come. \nVisual Ethnographers: Professor Souzeina Mushtaq\, Communication and Media Studies\, University of Wisconsin–River Falls\nProfessor Praveen K. SUMMARY:Exhibition: City in Bloom: Rediscovering Nature's Fragments — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Story Stitchers Collective\, Peace in the Prairie\, 2022. (Video still).\nFebruary 13–March 25\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery \nCity in Bloom is a meditation on the resilience of the human experience and the restorative capacity of nature within urban life. From the shaded elegance of tree-lined streets to the verdant sophistication of plants nurtured within apartments\, these moments of “urban nature” assert themselves to our advantage\, reminding city dwellers that serenity\, a sense of place within the infinite universe\, can be accessed simply by watching for owls in Central Park or pigeons on one’s own windowsill; beholding slivers of light\, cloud\, and sky between shimmery\, towering skyscrapers; listening for seagulls as one walks toward a lake or river\, then smelling the salty breeze floating across it. After all\, even in the most industrialized of spaces\, nature’s carefully calibrated biorhythms persist. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Mary Katrantzou\, printed\, embroidered\, and beaded dress with net overlay\, spring 2019\, England\, museum purchase\, 2023.52.1\nFebruary 19–April 20\, 2025\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\nThe Museum at FIT \nFashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities is an inventive exhibition that provides the first in-depth exploration of the fascinating connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. Also known as wunderkammern in German\, cabinets of curiosities can be traced back to the early 16th century. They were precursors to the modern museum\, and many included examples of clothing. The exhibition features nearly 200 garments and accessories\, almost exclusively selected from MFIT’s permanent collection\, which are inspired by the breadth of objects collected within the cabinets. The objects on view\, many of which are shown for the first time\, are meant to pique curiosity through their rarity\, beauty\, or originality. \nAn introductory gallery examines the history of cabinets of curiosities\, explaining their significance to the Age of Exploration (15th to 17th centuries)\, their ties to colonialism\, and the need for contemporary museums to be more inclusive and informed about the objects they acquire. It also highlights the interconnections between curiosity\, creativity\, and collecting. A dress by Mary Katrantzou dates to her 10th anniversary collection in 2019\, in which she expressed the urge “to amass like objects of a particular kind\, to record\, to study and identify\, to protect and cherish.” Its intricate patterning includes butterflies and seashells\, both of which are regularly featured in the cabinets. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Exhibition: All That Glitters … — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Paco Rabanne\, evening dress\, 1969\, France\, gift of Montgomery Ward\, 81.48.2.\nFebruary 26–March 23\, 2025\nThe Museum at FIT Lobby \nFIT’s School of Graduate Studies\, in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, presents All That Glitters … \, a new exhibition conceived and organized by students in the college’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. \nAll that glitters is not always gold—it can be any medium that catches the light\, shines\, and reflects. The post–World War II era saw a blossoming of new textiles and technologies that changed the relationship between fashion materials and light. All That Glitters … explores surfaces that shine\, focusing on themes of material production\, social and financial values\, and conservation. It examines not only the bright side of these materials\, but also their darker side–including their environmental impact and their use in protests\, such as “glitter bombing.” \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Social Responsibilities of Museums — Closes
DESCRIPTION:January 21–April 20\, 2025 \nGladys Marcus Library\, Fourth Floor Exhibit Case \nStudents in FIT’s Art History and Museum Professions program reflected on the social responsibilities of museums in recognition of Black History Month.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Being Hyper Human — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Niyosha Bhagat Malcolm Sales Geet Karthik \nJune 7–September 3\, 2025\nArt and Design Gallery \nBeing Hyper Human is a collaborative exhibition that brings together photography and video works by students\, alumni\, and faculty from Fashion Institute of Technology and Srishti Manipal Institute of Art\, Design\, and Technology (SMI) in Bengaluru\, India. \nIn more ways than one\, our worlds are closer than ever. We encounter images of distant places directly in the palm of our hands. Our sense of time oscillates between lived experience and its representation on our screens. Increasingly\, we seek the image of reality more than reality itself. Photography plays a pivotal role in this flattening of the world—where performing for the camera becomes as ordinary as observing through it. With the rise of digital and social media platforms\, we often have to become images before we can connect with others. This exhibition reflects on what it means to inhabit this hyper-image world\, presenting works that examine our deepening entanglement with images: What relationship do we have with images of ourselves? What meanings of the present are generated by looking at them? Why are we unsettled when reality doesn’t match its image? And\, what becomes of our being if being human is increasingly tagged to an image? \nBeing Hyper Human is on view at the Art and Design Gallery from June 7 through September 3\, 2025. \nParticipating artists from FIT and SMI: \nMia Baric (FIT BFA 2027)\nMihika Baruah (SMI BFA 2027)\nNiyosha Bhagat (SMI BDes 2027)\nKiley Cacace (FIT BFA 2027)\nAbbygail Coston (FIT BFA 2024)\nNafisah Crumity (FIT BFA 2024)\nZion DoucettPerry (FIT BFA 2026)\nZoya RaZaiba Hussain (FIT AAS 2024)\nAngelina Jairam (FIT BFA 2027)\nGeet Karthik (SMI BFA 2027)\nSanath Kumar (SMI MDes 2026 )\nHarini MS (SMI MDes 2026 )\nNina Perricone (FIT BFA 2026)\nKenya Pinos (FIT BFA 2024)\nCristina Rosario (FIT BFA 2027)\nNaomi Simone Schulz (FIT BFA 2026)\nMalcolm Sales (FIT BFA 2024)\nMegha Singha (SMI)\nKritika Srivastava (SMI)\nSiri Sruthi Udayaravi (SMI BFA 2026)\nSrujan Zope (SMI) \nProfessors and organizers: \nBrian Emery\, FIT\nBrad Paris\, FIT\nMahesh Bhat\, SMI\nJatin Gulati\, SMI
