SUMMARY:Exhibition: Unconventional Then\, Now\, and Always: A Helix of FIT Influence from Max Meyer to Daria Dorosh — Opens
DESCRIPTION:August 3–September 10\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nIn the early decades of the 20th century\, FIT founder and president Max Meyer (1876–1953)\, then a buyer for a major New York City cloak and suit manufacturer\, commissioned thousands of drawings of French couture designs to be licensed for production in the U.S. This exhibition juxtaposes a selection of these sublime watercolor and ink images from houses such as Chanel\, Poiret\, Molyneux\, Lanvin\, and Paquin with comparable examples of actual garments from the study collection of FIT’s graduate program in Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice. Each garment showcases student and alumni skills in costume conservation and mounting. \nAn adjoining gallery features the work of alum and former professor Daria Dorosh\, PhD. Her contemporary art and fashion pieces respond to Meyer in many ways\, and also stand on their own. \nUnconventional Then\, Now\, and Always will feature innovative augmented reality displays that invite engagement. The show highlights the unique resource that is Gladys Marcus Library’s Special Collections and College Archives where the original sketches reside along with an astounding wealth of original materials related to the industry. \nThe show is a collaboration between the Spatial Experience Design Department\, Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice\, and the Special Collections and College Archives. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and guest artists in each exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open from 9 am to 6 pm daily. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Chasing a Dying River: Ghat 24 Yamuna\, Delhi\, India — Closes
DESCRIPTION:February 5–August 31\, 2023\nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth Floor \n\nRead an article about this exhibition on FIT’s Newsroom here.  \n\nNew Delhi\, the capital of India\, is ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world. The city is also home to a passing river\, the Yamuna\, one of the two most sacred rivers in Vedic literature for thousands of years. Besides being the doorway to deep spirituality\, the rivers Yamuna and the Ganges have also played a significant role in modern India’s political history\, religious culture\, and economy. \nAlthough the river originates from the glacier 20\,000 feet above sea level and travels a total length of 855 miles\, these images focus on Ghat 24\, one of the 32 contiguous historic stairways on the Yamuna river in Delhi. These images provide a glimpse of daily life\, including a significant crematorium\, a modern highway\, a cantilevered subway system\, and TikTok creators on this severely polluted river. They also give us a glimpse of human contradictions of deep spirituality and environmental indifference towards a river celebrated since ancient times. Unfortunately\, the mega city is now the primary source of pollution in the river Yamuna. \nArtists\nPraveen K. Chaudhry\, PhD\, is a professor in the Social Sciences and Global Fashion Management departments. Souzeina Mushtaq\, PhD\, is an assistant professor (visiting) of Communication and Media Studies at the School of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin\, River Falls. Together they have been working on multiple projects\, including photographing the nomads and weavers of the Taurus Mountains in Turkey\, the Changtang plateau in Tibet\, Ladakh\, and the Kashmir Valley. While on pandemic lockdown in New York they created a new work\, “New York City: Pandemic\, Resilience\, and Hope.” The pair have exhibited their work several times at FIT\, as well as at galleries in Mexico\, India\, and the United States. They have also shown in various virtual exhibitions. \nCurator\nGabrielle Lauricella is the campus exhibitions coordinator for The Museum at FIT. They address humankind’s most basic needs\, and also offer a significant window into our societies. The histories of food and fashion as consumer and cultural products have converged over the past three centuries. Fashion designers turn to food themes and motifs to comment on critical topics ranging from cultural identity to sustainability\, social activism\, and body politics\, to ideas related to femininity\, domesticity\, nostalgia\, and consumerism. \nFood & Fashion is a major exhibition exploring the relationship between these related topics. Featuring over 90 works\, it includes garments\, accessories\, and textiles by designers such as Chanel\, Delvaux\, Comme des Garçons\, Carla Fernandez\, Stella Jean\, Judith Leiber\, Issey Miyake\, William Morris\, Moschino\, Rick Owens\, Charles Frederick Worth\, and Jason Wu. DESCRIPTION:October 27–December 3\, 2023\nArt and Design Gallery \nCurated by FIT Associate Professor of Fine Arts Julia Jacquette\, this exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Technology features work that utilizes and explores all aspects of repetition and pattern. \nPattern is often thought of in terms of art and design: the repetition of shape in surface design. But the definition of pattern can be even more expansive: It’s a regularity or repetition in the world in general. It includes the repetition of abstract ideas as well as form. \nPattern\, the Grid\, and Other Systems will include two-dimensional\, three-dimensional\, and time-based artwork from FIT faculty\, students\, and distinguished alumni\, as well as from guest artists. Their successes have paved the way for new generations of talented designers including Gabriela Hearst\, Carla Fernández\, and Willy Chavarria. These represent only a few of the emerging designers who are making their mark on the fashion scene by creating for famous fashion houses\, winning prestigious awards\, and dressing celebrity clients. \n¡Moda Hoy! Latin American and Latinx Fashion Design Today includes creators from Latin American countries\, as well as designers of Latin American heritage living and working in the United States and Europe who are often referred to as Hispanic\, Latino/Latina\, or the gender-neutral term Latinx. DESCRIPTION:Madame Grès\, evening gown (detail)\, navy blue silk taffeta\, circa 1980\, France\, gift of Mrs. Mildred Hilson\, 82.234.3\nJanuary 24\, 2024\nFashion and Textile History Gallery \nWhether puffed\, ruffled\, split\, or sheer\, statement sleeves have been a ubiquitous fashion trend for the past decade. These dramatic\, contemporary creations can enliven and update a wardrobe\, yet many current sleeve styles have cycled in and out of fashion for decades\, if not centuries. Although sleeves can be especially challenging to make\, they also inspire countless creative ideas. \nStatement Sleeves takes an original approach to the history of fashion. The selected garments date from the 18th century to the present\, but they are not presented chronologically. They are instead organized by type. Following an introduction to basic sleeve shapes—from gigot to raglan—visitors will encounter the myriad ways in which designers have reinterpreted and remixed sleeves through variations in material\, shape\, embellishment\, and even functionality. More than 60 styles\, all from the museum’s permanent collection\, emphasize how sleeves hold the power to define a look—in both the past and present. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:February 9–March 3\, 2024\nArt and Design Gallery \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Art and Design Gallery celebrates the artwork and teaching of Fine Arts Professor Susan Daykin. Throughout the 52 years she has worked at FIT\, her impact on the Fine Arts program\, its students\, and the college at large has been nothing short of profound. This exhibition will include a survey of work by Daykin and nine of her former students: Jackie Bertucci\, Jade Chan\, Abigail DeVille\, Rachel Kamali Dilmanian\, Rebecca Eden\, Carla Lynk\, Tushar Nath\, Pamela Stoicev\, and Vivian Vasquez.  \nThe exhibition will also include sculptures and objects from her own collection. Daykin acquired these objects from artisans she met over the years and throughout her travels. Her collection has deeply informed her visual sensibilities and are reflected in the breadth and colorful influence of her creative practice and teaching. \nA panel discussion with Daykin\, her colleagues\, and former students will be scheduled at some date during the exhibition. \nThe Colorful Influence of Susan Daykin is curated by Fine Arts Associate Professor Joel Werring and an alumna from FIT’s Art Market Studies MA program\, Caroline Teck. \n\nAbout the Art and Design Gallery \nThe Art and Design Gallery brings together the work of FIT students\, faculty\, alumni\, and invited outside artists in every exhibition. The gallery\, located in the glass-walled lobby of FIT’s Pomerantz Center\, is a window into the college and a window out\, serving as a space to foster learning and innovation. \nThe gallery is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

How do we view the communities that shaped us into who we are today? \nFor Black History Month\, students from the FIT Black Student Union present Love Thy Neighbor’Hood\, an exhibition that illustrates the dynamics of home and what that means to each artist. From an outside perspective\, many predominantly black neighborhoods are viewed as dangerous and scary places\, where nothing good ever comes about. These artists are challenging that narrative through their art. The exhibit features works of varying mediums created by people of a wide-range of backgrounds across the diaspora. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

Experience their allure in Untying the Bow\, an exhibition curated by graduate students in FIT’s Fashion and Textiles Studies MA program. Discover the ubiquitous influence of bows in our lives\, transcending shoelaces to become a subtle yet powerful element of personal style. \nUntying the Bow is an exploration into the utility and symbolism of this pervasive element of clothing. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the rich history\, symbolism\, and enduring charm of bows in fashion. It unfolds in three thematic sections\, beginning by tracing the bow’s origins and delving into its form and function for utilitarian purposes. The next theme is the bow’s symbolism as a marker and subverter of status and gender. Finally\, the exhibition examines how the symbolism of bows in fashion has evolved into abstract forms and patterns. Experiments with scale and technique allow bows to transcend their original form and become captivating motifs. Untying the Bow is a transformative journey\, unraveling the hidden narratives and cultural expressions that have elevated the bow from a mere structural element to a timeless icon in fashion. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.
