SUMMARY:Exhibition: Beyond Utility — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Yvonne Schichtel\, Trench Dress\, 2021. Photo courtesy of designer.\nFebruary 25–March 22\, 2026\nGoodman Center Lobby \nBeyond Utility\, curated by graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History\, Theory\, Museum Practice MA program in collaboration with The Museum at FIT\, examines the perpetual transformation of utilitarian design within and beyond the fashion system. Throughout history\, fashion and anti-fashion groups have adopted and abstracted clothing born out of necessity\, continuously negotiating between form and function. Showcasing never-before-displayed objects from the MFIT Study Collection and the FTS Graduate Study Collection\, the exhibition pairs utility dress archetypes with their later reinterpretations\, featuring designs from Issey Miyake\, BOY London\, Bonnie Cashin\, Junya Watanabe\, Burberry\, Moschino\, and more. \nThe case studies span three sections\, unbound by chronology: “Workwear: Beyond Labor\,” “Military: Beyond Combat\,” and “Craft: Beyond Domesticity\,” exploring the interplay between materials\, aesthetics\, and cultural connotations. By investigating objects that have unique biographies and lived-experiences\, Beyond Utility reveals how utility dress can shape ideas of style\, from factories and battlefields to runways and city streets. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Art X Fashion — Opens
DESCRIPTION:Wales Bonner X Kerry James Marshall\, cotton t-shirt reproducing Lost Boys: AKA Black Sonny (1993) by Kerry James Marshall\, spring 2023\, museum purchase\, 2022.55.1\nFebruary 18–April 19\, 2026\nSpecial Exhibitions Gallery\nThe Museum at FIT \nArt X Fashion is a major exhibition exploring the entangled and shifting relationship between fine art and fashion—typically considered a “decorative” or “applied” art. Curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way\, curator of Costume and Accessories\, and featuring 140 garments\, textiles\, and accessories from The Museum at FIT’s permanent collection\, this exhibition traces fashion and art’s parallel aesthetics from 18th century rococo to late-20th century postmodernism. \nUtilizing the theoretical framework developed by art and fashion historian Dr. Christopher Richards\, Art X Fashion invites viewers to consider the much-asked question\, “Is fashion art?” through historic and contemporary examples. Further themes explore the overlapping art-and-fashion work of artists—such as Salvador Dalí\, Sonia Delaunay\, Kerry James Marshall\, Antonio Lopez\, and Pablo Picasso—and fashion designers\, including Hussein Chalayan\, Issey Miyake\, Paul Poiret\, Elsa Schiaparelli\, and Vivienne Tam\, as well as the ways artists use fashion to shape their identities and expand their cultural significance.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Rewind\, Play\, Fast Forward: Animation and Game Design at FIT and Beyond — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Image by Dan Shefelman/The Animation Project.\nJanuary 17–February 15\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nRewind\, Play\, Fast Forward: Animation and Game Design at FIT and Beyond celebrates animation and game design work by FIT students\, faculty\, and alumni of the School of Art and Design and the School of Graduate Studies. \nThe exhibition surveys works created in New York City and beyond\, showing how storytelling appears in animation\, where a storyline can take on a linear structure\, and in game design\, where players shape the story themselves. On display are a wide variety of game and animation art\, concept and character designs\, and games to play\, along with a special guest exhibition of world-class work from Hornet\, an New York–based animation studio that produces all forms of commercial work\, including stop-motion and computer-generated animation. \nAt FIT\, students in the Illustration BFA program can specialize in design for animation and games\, where they learn about concept art and character design to understand how characters and sets work together to create worlds and tell stories. Students in the Animation\, Interactive Media\, and Game Design BFA program take the process from design to completion\, adding movement\, sound\, and/or gameplay. Alumni of both programs have gone on to work for renowned studios\, including DreamWorks\, NBC Universal\, Disney\, and Titmouse\, where they continue to create character designs\, concept art\, and animation for popular shows. Others have formed their own game and animation companies. \nRewind\, Play\, Fast Forward is curated by Dan Shefelman\, chair of Illustration and Interactive Media\, and organized by the Department of Illustration and Interactive Media. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Fashion Design AAS Exhibition: Evolution — Closes
DESCRIPTION:Illustration by Janelle Lee.\nDecember 11\, 2025–January 11\, 2026\nArt and Design Gallery \nEvolution is the fall/winter Fashion Design AAS exhibition\, exploring the natural cycle of fashion through a floral lens. For this showcase\, students delve into the theme of evolution—from the seed of a concept to the buds of growth\, from the blossoms of creativity to the final bloom of completion. Each phase of their process reflects change\, transformation\, and renewal. \nIn the spirit of collaboration\, students from the Illustration program interpret transformation through fashion illustrations\, while students from Photography and Related Media capture moments of becoming—documenting their peers in the Fashion Design AAS program as they bring new visions to life. \nConception\, iteration\, and creation—Evolution celebrates fashion’s continual\, ever-unfolding movement forward\, shaped by growth and renewal. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Fashion Design AAS Exhibition Committee\, in collaboration with Dan Shefelman\, chair of Illustration and Interactive Media\, and Allison Wade Wermager\, chair of Photography. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.   \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Resistance and Resilience: The Weavers of Oaxaca — Closes
DESCRIPTION:January 27\, 2025–January 5\, 2026\nGladys Marcus Library\, Fifth Floor Gallery \n“Weaving is not just an economic activity; it is a means through which Zapotec women express their cultural identity and maintain a connection to their ancestral heritage.” —from Lynn Stephen’s book\, Zapotec Women \nAs you step into this exhibition\, imagine walking through the vibrant villages of Oaxaca. Every home is filled with the clack of looms and the scent of natural dyes simmering over open fires. In these spaces\, weaving is far more than craft; it is a way of life. Here\, threads connect past and present\, and each textile tells a story of resilience. For generations\, the artisans of Oaxaca have woven their world into intricate patterns that speak of nature\, ancestors\, and community bonds. Their craft represents an unbroken line of knowledge passed down through centuries\, each knot and dye preserving both their heritage and identity. \nToday\, this work faces new challenges. The same global markets that bring opportunity also demand compromise\, pressuring artisans to adapt their traditional designs and methods to appeal to modern tastes and industrial efficiency. What was once woven for local use now finds itself at the crossroads of preservation and commodification\, as artisans delicately balance their heritage with the demands of survival. Yet\, these weavers resist\, transforming their art into a quiet rebellion that continuously preserves cultural identity while navigating a rapidly changing world. \nThis exhibition explores the diversity of Oaxaca’s weaving traditions\, encompassing techniques and designs from different regions of the state. The natural dyes featured in these textiles\, drawn from plants\, insects\, and minerals\, embody a deep relationship with the land and its ecosystems. However\, these dyes are not inherently sustainable. Their reliance on nature’s cycles\, and the ecosystems that support them\, places them at risk—dependent on human practices that must prioritize balance\, preservation\, and systemic care. The relationship between artisans and the natural world is one of both beauty and fragility\, reminding us that such resources require thoughtful stewardship. \nThrough these curated images\, textiles\, and garments\, you’ll witness how weaving has become a tool for empowerment and collective action. Beyond its economic role\, weaving fosters community resilience and solidarity\, offering a platform for addressing broader social and environmental challenges. Each piece reflects the intricate patterns of adaptation\, creativity\, and pride that define Oaxaca’s artisans and their enduring traditions. \nThis exhibition invites you to honor these weavers as cultural keepers and storytellers\, preserving their heritage one thread at a time. It is a call to recognize the resilience of their practices and the shared responsibility to support their continued legacy\, ensuring their artistry and stories enrich generations to come. \nVisual Ethnographers: Professor Souzeina Mushtaq\, Communication and Media Studies\, University of Wisconsin–River Falls\nProfessor Praveen K. SUMMARY:Fashion Design AAS Exhibition: Evolution — Opens
