Fast forward to today\, the technique has been adopted by big brands\, such as Kenzo and Maison Margiela. According to Atsushi Futatsuya\, sashiko introduced in English is not wrong\, but unfortunately\, it isn’t usually introduced or described in its entirety. \nThis virtual discussion will explain what sashiko means and represents to the Japanese people\, as it is often communicated with missing elements and can be romanticized in Western culture. Moderated by Cultural Fellow Hinako Ishii\, Fashion Business Management\, who is an international student from Japan. \nAtsushi Futatsuya was born into the third generation of a surviving sashiko family in Gifu prefecture. The book is a visually rich portrait of an architect whose most internationally lauded creations include the lavish commercial interiors for the iconic Bullock’s Wilshire store in Los Angeles and the tragically forgotten Hollander department store in New York City. \nAmong Peters’s early work in Germany are the Levantehaus and Karstadt department stores\, a magnificent glass pavilion from 1916\, and his work for Peter Behrens after the war. But\, the architect’s most accomplished and compelling work came after 1922 when he settled in Southern California. \nLong’s study on early modernism includes material from the architect’s personal archive\, still in family hands. Datafication is the process whereby everyday practices and experiences are turned into quantified digital data. Rocamora will unpack this phenomenon\, focusing in particular on the field of fashion influencers. She will reflect on the role of data as capital and of algorithms as key players and gatekeepers in fashion. \nDr. Agnès Rocamora is professor of social and cultural studies at the London College of Fashion\, University of the Arts London. Professor Christopher Long presents his new book titled Jock Peters\, Architecture and Design: The Varieties of Modernism by Bauer and Dean Publishers. The book is a visually rich portrait of an architect whose most internationally lauded creations include the lavish commercial interiors for the iconic Bullock’s Wilshire store in Los Angeles and the tragically forgotten Hollander department store in New York City. \nAmong Peters’s early work in Germany are the Levantehaus and Karstadt department stores\, a magnificent glass pavilion from 1916\, and his work for Peter Behrens after the war. But\, the architect’s most accomplished and compelling work came after 1922 when he settled in Southern California. \nLong’s study on early modernism includes material from the architect’s personal archive\, still in family hands. Exploring issues related to the ingenuity of different Arctic cultures as repositories of the heritage of fish skin as a cultural and ecological resource\, Dr. Palomino seeks to activate new models of sustainable textiles\, making connections between anthropology\, fashion\, and indigenous knowledge. \nElisa Palomino\, PhD\, is a fashion designer with 25 years’ experience in the fashion industry at John Galliano and Christian Dior. Until recently\, Dr. Palomino was the BA Fashion Print pathway leader at Central Saint Martins\, UAL\, London. As an international fashion lecturer\, she was a Fulbright Scholar at the Smithsonian Institution’s Arctic Studies Center and held fellowships at the Library of Congress and at The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. \nPalomino will be in a conversation with Professor Sarah Mullins. Mullins is the assistant chair of the Footwear and Accessories Design Department at FIT. She teaches courses in accessories product design and development\, Adobe Illustrator\, and senior thesis. Mullins’s design experience specializes in handbags\, leather goods\, pattern design\, and children’s products. For more than 14 years\, she was a senior designer on Maclaren’s global product development team. In addition to teaching and designing\, Mullins has co-authored several books on making handbags and belts. She continues to make leather goods for distinct clients. Christie will talk about his first-ever book of photography\, Willie Christie—A Very Distinctive Style: Then and Now. A Q&A will follow. \nWillie Christie was born a while ago. During the ‘70s and early ‘80s he worked extensively as a photographer with British Vogue. His portfolio includes award-winning advertising campaigns (L’Oréal and Yves Saint Laurent)\, fashion and portrait work for international icons (e.g.\, Cary Grant\, Grace Jones\, Catherine Deneuve) and rock ‘n’ roll album covers and portraits (e.g.\, Rolling Stones\, Pink Floyd\, David Bowie\, and more). After winning a series of awards and being featured in several exhibitions\, the lure of film pulled him away from photographs. In 1982\, he moved into the realm of writing and directing commercials and music videos\, such as for Pink Floyd’s Final Cut album and the first cinema commercial for Medway shoes.
