SUMMARY:Exhibition: Figured Cloth: From Sketch to Jacquard — Opens
DESCRIPTION:October 1–11\, 2026\nGoodman Center Lobby \n“Figured cloth” is a historical term for a textile with a pattern\, or motif\, woven directly into its structure during the manufacturing process\, rather than printed or dyed on its surface. These textiles\, also known as jacquard fabrics\, are now developed using specialized textile design software. This exhibition showcases the jacquard fabrics designed by Textile/Surface Design students in the spring of 2026. \nFigured Cloth highlights the evolution of skills and the wide range of creative expression in the jacquard design course. Starting with hand-drawn and painted motifs\, students then use weaving software as a tool to iterate\, evaluate\, and execute their designs. These textiles display the design\, conceptual\, and technical skills the Textile/Surface Design students have mastered to complete their work. \nSpecial thanks to MTL Inc. for supporting the next generation of textile designers and weaving the fabrics in this exhibition. \nThis exhibition is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Fashion Culture: The King of Japanese Kawaii

Courtesy of Sebastian Masuda.\nFIT Professor Yuniya Kawamura will be in conversation with fashion and art creator Sebastian Masuda\, internationally recognized as the leading figure in Japan’s kawaii (cute) subculture. Masuda understands kawaii not merely as an aesthetic\, but as an explicit\, nonviolent mode of rebellion and resistance—one comparable to other Japanese youth subcultures that assert identity through unconventional forms of dress and self-presentation. \nA book signing follows the event. \nFashion Culture programs are organized by The Museum at FIT to provide new perspectives on the culture of fashion. All programs are free unless otherwise indicated.
